What happens if you don't pay billag and you're leaving Switzerland?

Last year the guy from billag rang my door, when I opened he was already filling his questionnaire as my radio was on and quite loud. I explained that I was on a diplomatic permit and therefore not liable to pay, but he didn't care.

A couple of weeks afterwards bills started to pile up on my desk.
I didn't pay them as I was exempted due to my permit.

The thing now is that I exchanged that type of permit a couple of months ago for a 'D' carte de legitimation -wich I've just found out-, doesn't exempt me from paying billag.

I've been transferred somewhere else and I'm leaving Switzerland in a few days, my questions are:

What could happen if I leave without paying billag?

Do you think that the cantonal office that issues certificates of departure knows about my 'debt' with billag?

thanks in advance for your replies/thoughts

Feign ignorance and leave... if you were exampt for 99% of the time you were using the Billag, then why pay all of it for the 1% aou were liable?

Re: What happens if you don't pay billag and you're leaving Switzerland?

Hi...
happened to me aswell....first of all I want to say that the whole Billag and Cablecom thing is absolutely A NIGHTMARE!!!

And Billag a true unnecessary pain in the derrier!!

I never subscribed to it as I was in CH for a year but didn't have a telly and was travelling a lot so didn't bother.

But somehow they managed to chase me up, they send around those dude's for inspection.

I had a stereo so was listening to Music and obviously Radio....once I left the country the chased up the agency I was renting the flat with...and they contacted me...had to pay something like 350 CHF...sort of a fine....

Maybe better clarify, don't see why u have to pay extra cash for nothing.
Stand your ground. They are the most useless company I have ever encountered in my entire life, if you try to get through to them...they are unfriendly and just wont listen to you.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments... it is truly a nightmare having to deal with this now... I know, I know... it's all my fault, but the whole billag thing is so strange to me that I never really realised its importance.

What I will try to do is to send them a copy of my certificate of departure (if I can get one), and a copy of my permits (again). Let's see if this time they get to recalculate my fees, if so, I'll pay them right away.

Still not sure if I will be able to get the certificate of departure, due to this pending 'debt'...
