This is a big problem, just look at the impact it has had on the Swiss music scene. When did a Swiss rock band make it in the top 40 last?

To play guitars (either standard ones or electric guitars not louder than the standard ones) or piano (incl Harmonium) is ok in apartments between 8am and 12, and between 2pm and 8pm

Drums and trumpets and trombones are too loud

Re: music loud in the apartment

I would suggest that you get to know your neighbours right adjacent to your flat. Talk to them, invite them, tell them to let you know when you're too loud.

Re: music loud in the apartment

his neighbours should tell him when he's being too loud?? I'd call the cops after the first complaint - you can't play amplified guitar in an apartment building anywhere! Use headphones!

The post nr 1 does not specify what kind of guitar we are speaking about.

But if it IS an electric (amplified) guitar, he has to adjust the noise level to a level acceptable for an apartment. It is obvious that the electric guitars were developed in order to compete in loudness to trumpets, trombones and saxophones, but as the father of a schoolfriend, a professional music manager, long ago showed us (the grandmother of my friend was shocked), you can change the sound, you can move the loudness up (Mrs M came rushing in, but retreated) or down.

We for years had a professional piano player in the apartment above, and he was in constant conversations will all the neighbours. Generally we enjoyed his excellent playing, both classic and modern.

Another aspect is how to place things in an apartment. Important is that the walls towards your neighbours are insulated, either by furniture, or wand-carpets. Loudspeakers shoud NOT be on the wall and not on metallic things but on wooden things.

The second husband of the mother of the friend mentioned above was a professional on clarinet and the husband of his godmother a professional on trumpet, clarinet and piano, and they at times exercised in the house of his Grandmum. They found out that the eating-room was well insulated by furniture, looked out into the garden. And also good positions with one window closed the other one open where they could exercise without disturbing people.

Re: music loud in the apartment

The Swiss would probably call the police even if you played an air guitar. I'd do what was suggested above and speak with your neighbours. Try and agree a time slot where it would be tolerated and ask them to knock on your door any time it became annoying.

Giving them that option by going to see them all personally should stop them calling the police or ganging up to make the landlord hate you.
