Swiss postmen leaving packages ( packages in your mailbox )

Does anyone know the law / rules regarding Swiss Post leaving parcels in the bottom (i.e. unsecured area ) of your mail box ?

One of my colleagues thinks some books were stolen from his post box but doesn't know where to claim or if indeed he has a claim.

thanks for any help

I thought this thread was about financial packages (golden parachutes) after leaving your job posting in Switzerland.

Re: Swiss postmen leaving packages ( packages in your mailbox )

I d first ask the sender for the tracking number so that your friend can track whether the books were really delivered. Might save him a lot of hassle and issues.
Otherwise I dont know about rules. Personally, I dont care for it either if the postman just leaves parcels in front of my door where everyone else from the appartments above walk through too. I ve considered writing a note an sticking it to my mailbox/door everytime I expect a package asking them to take it with them and I ll pick it up myself.

Re: Swiss postmen leaving packages ( packages in your mailbox )

Postmen leave bulky packages in the bottom of your mailbox ONLY if mail was unregistered (no tracking number). There's no way to check whether something was delivered into this box.

Funny thing - for the first month in Switzerland I had a lot of lost parcels, that is until I found I have a bulky-items box and they are all waiting there .

yes it was sent un-registered and so just left..
but my colleague just spoke with the sending company and they have agreed to resend, "signed for" and they will chase the first shipment with Swisspost ( I don't know the system in Switz but they were college textbooks... so sent either from the school or a retail outlet )

Er unless the postman has a key to it, I dont understand how that will work. Wouldnt he still have to slot the BULKY parcel into the mail slot of the parcel box??

I have my Amazon parcels left in the unlocked parcel box under my locked mail box many times. Cant say I'm comfortable with that but I've had no problems with that so far. *touch wood* I mean, its Switzerland right?

apparently they work ( from what I just read ) like the luggage boxes at train stations and such... in this case the postie would open the box , leave the parcel, take the key from inside the box, lock the box and deposit the key in your regular mail slot.

all this is assuming yobs havnet made off with the key from inside the parcel box to begin with but as you say... this is Switzerland.

Re: Swiss postmen leaving packages ( packages in your mailbox )

somewhat related story... I bought my wife an anniversary present and had it scheduled for delivery to our cottage in Cornwall... Fed Ex attempted to deliver before we got there so I found a nice little card "please phone us to schedule delivery"

I phoned them on a monday morning and explained the next day I would be there to accept delivery would be Thursday... could you please deliver on thursday... ya sure... no problem.

mrs and I got back from shopping the next day... tuesday.. and there was a FedEx box popped against the door

1).. we are secluded but still I was surprised it hadn't walked itself off before we got home.

2).. I should have done the yob thing myself... waited til thursday and rung FedEx and asked when my box would be delivered.

We've had three parcels stolen from our parcel tray - we weren't even aware until the building manager showed us the torn open wrappings and asked if we'd left our rubbish on the floor of the foyer!!!

I just get all parcels sent to my office now, at least I know our receptionists are honest!!

Re: Swiss postmen leaving packages ( packages in your mailbox )

Personally I love those paket-boxes. Spares me a great deal of visiting the post office. I get lots of mail each week and only once recently didn't receive one book (and I suspect it's the sellers fault - purchased on amazon.co.uk market, but sold from the US, I expected trouble from the beginning - long time before (alleged) shipment etc.).

I'd hate it if I had to go to the post office every second day, and it's an additional delay.

Of course anything of important value goes registered.

Actually the day before yesterday, the postman delivering registered mail caught me before I left for work. He asked what would be the optimal time to catch me at home and agreed to try and match his timing. Impressive. I must be a really important client ;-).

Re: Swiss postmen leaving packages ( packages in your mailbox )

A few weeks ago received a box in our parcel box. The only hic! was that the box was bigger than the parcel box. So the postman had to push it hard to be able to close the door.

I spend 30 minutes sweating, swearing like crazy to try to take out the box stuck in there.... I left some of my skin in the process....

D*ckhead!

Re: Swiss postmen leaving packages ( packages in your mailbox )

Twice when buying from within CH I got large packages and the mailman just left them inside my building, if I had not been looking (or as nosy as I am) the package would have stayed there forever...so far nothing has been stolen from my bulk mail compartment, but I do use my working address most of the times

we've had to alert our mailman not to just leave things on the doorstep and such... our landlords mother lives just across from us and has developed Alzheimer's and has recently started "collecting" things... left mail...another neighbors golf shoes... door mats (twice )

bless her.

Yes I had a parcel from Germany left on the door step which cost 700 euro.
I was lucky.
