Probably because Powder cleans much better than Gel, at least for White clothes (Gel does not contain bleach).

Interesting, but in spite of having some white t-shirts, I have not seen a difference

Re: help! how to wash your clothes in hard water?

I have bought Calgon and Woolite yesterday and I will buy powder too if this really makes clothes go whiter

also going to try lemon juice, apparently it removes the calcium too
any other products you can suggest? it is really hard for me as I don't read German, often spend hours in front of the products to figure out what they are...(yeah if you saw someone hanging out laundry aisle for a long long time in Coop, that would probably be me...)

how about those ones with label 'black or velvet'? is that the washing gel or softener? what does it do? to prevent clothes from fading?

ah..i am so serious about my washing!

This article is from 2002. I have a degree in Textil and technology and I can assure you that gel is better on the long run on clothes. Powder leave a layer on it and can change the color over time.

You could clean your clothes with nuts as well. What is matter is the machine you have.

...a short aside: does anyone know if there's a Swiss 'water hardness map' available online? Tried to navigate the BS/BL website but to no avail.

You have to up the dosage...3 times as much powder for a hard water area than a soft water area...
This is what the packets say - BUT - if you have a new (i.e. <5 years old) washing machine these use much much less water than old ones. And in this case you should in fact reduce the amount of powder recommended on the pack otherwise you'll get deposits of old powder on your clothes and this can in fact cause white/grey patches and other issues with clothes, not to mention ruining your machine. You will find deposits of old powder in the rubber rim round the machine.

The washing machine guy who recently fixed my machine told me all this - and whilst at the time I thought this was utter tosh, he was in fact absolutely right . He also told me I must use calgon / water softeners in the wash.

So, since I started using calgon and reduced the amount of powder to the minimum it says on the pack, the quality of my washes has gotten much much better. No grey patches and perfectly clean. Not to mention it costs us much less in terms of how much washing powder we buy.

Also, he said I should use a washing machine cleaner about twice a year.

I use ariel powder, always have, and I use a fabric softener too. And we live in the hardest of the hard water areas - where your kettle fuzzes up if you just look at it.

So summary: calgon, less powder, washing machine cleaner every 6 months.

Your answer is a link to an other forum?

Please, if you want to call me fake, bring real stats and scientifics informations...

I didn't say go and use washing nuts, I said that the machine is much more responsable of the quality of the washing, even if you don't use soap. You can have the most amazing soap in the world, if your machine is crap, the result will be poor.

No, there is NONE. Not least because the waterworks frequently adapt their mix to the availability of the supplies, which means in case of the "Kläranlage Wollishofen" at least once within 2 weeks. And the availability also is relevant to who takes up what.

That sucks! That means the company who produced the clothes didn't bother to pre-wash the wool before the confection process. A good company would have done that before.

Next time wash them at delicat cycle, it may help a bit.

Re: help! how to wash your clothes in hard water?

Sorry to hijack this thread a little, but it's on a related note. I found this old thread:

Hair problems?

where people were trying to find a shower filter to fight this hard water. it's giving me dandruff like crazy. and I know it's the water because I've changed shampoos a lot and it didn't help. And then for the last two weeks, I've only washed my hair with water and the dandruff is still there. Anyway, has anyone found a water filter for a shower handle?

Hi, add 1/4 cup of baking soda to your wash. Keeps them soft, fresh, and white or bright for the dark colors. Also, avoid drying...it is more harsh on clothes vs. hard water.

THANK YOU! We just bought a new machine, and I really want to take good care of it so that it lasts a long time. In Adliswil, we have very hard water. A few questions, though, as I'm still a little confused.

What type of Calgon do you use? Is it a liquid or a powder or a tablet? I bought some of the tablets and I've been putting one in each wash. I haven't noticed any negative side effects, but they are quite expensive!

What is the machine cleaner? What is it called? Where in the store is it found?

Does Ariel make a good laundry detergent for sensitive skin? I am allergic to just about everything!

Thanks again!

After six weeks my white t-shirts are now gray, thanks for the advice. I'll give some of these tips a try. I've been waiting to wear my white capri pants for the summer.
