I saw it too, at midnight, strangely it was flashing on and off like a strobe, quite strange.

Yesterday it was fully on at 8pm, but got shut down at 11pm, and then apparently re-started. Heard that it is the test-phase until next Wednesday, and then will officially be started on Thursday.

Re: new Christmas lighting at Bahnhofstrasse Zürich

A few years ago I saw the Bahnhofstrasse lighting almost exactly the same as this and was told it was for the last time, as they were going to "modernise" their decorations. Apparently the change didn't go down well, so they decided to go back to the old-style which I have to say IS better!

Re: new Christmas lighting at Bahnhofstrasse Zürich

When I visited Zürich in December last year, my Swiss friend was so ashamed of the decorations that he refused to take me to Bahnhofstrasse.

Re: new Christmas lighting at Bahnhofstrasse Zürich

I understand why the last ones were not universally popular. I guess they were a bit radical and modern for some.

I actually liked them, partly for the technological aspects. I am equally looking forward to seeing the new ones at Christmas. They seem to be a good combination of modern and traditional.

Yea that's what my coworkers told me... people were really turned off by the new lighting!

So Thursday the 25th is the actual lighting ceremony? Has anyone attended? Is it worth going? Thanks!

Re: new Christmas lighting at Bahnhofstrasse Zürich

Personally, I did not really enjoy the lights from recent years. I am not a huge fan of the modern and thought that the lighting lost a lot of its charm when they decided to modernize it. I am looking forward to seeing the new lights. Thanks for letting me know that they are already up. I have not been to the official ceremony before, but am hoping to make it next week.

Re: new Christmas lighting at Bahnhofstrasse Zürich

I thought the old 'new' ones were a great concept & would've grown to be loved if some clown hadn't decided to make the colour of them cold blue.

If the'yd been a warmer colour they would have gone down a lot better.

Anyway, as for being ashamed of them, nothing can ever stoop as low or shameful as London's Tango soft drink sponsored ones in the late 90's - All down Regent St: "'Tis The Season To Be Tango'd"

I thought the old lights were really cool, but can see that they did not fit to some christmassy stereotype.

What I think they could do is have the modern 'xmas' lights up 11 months of the year, which gave an interesting feel to bahnhofstrasse and the traditional xmas lights up over the xmas period.

Everybody's happy

(except the taxpayers who pay for the extra electricity costs, environmentalists and those who plain old loathed the lights)

Re: new Christmas lighting at Bahnhofstrasse Zürich

I for one am pleased that the powers that be have 'seen the light' and gone back to a more traditional aproach. Personally, I hated the 'snot icicles' with their oozing and writhing shadows.
I have noticed that if the Swiss Germans have a weakness, it is that they completely lose their objectivity and their grip on their wallet when approached by couple of skinny-black-polo-neck and rimless-rectangular-spectacle wearing, metrosexual architects / con(ceptual) artists / w4nkers who make a fandabbydozy presentation about the need for an extraordinary (and eye-wateringly expensive) project that will surely have the global cogniscenti in awe.
Other cities, Basel and Stuttgart for example, were running 'Come to our Christmas market' adverts on the Zürich trams, with on one side a fully decked out Christmas tree representing their city, and on the other, a neon tube in a Christmas tree holder representing Zürich.
The shame...

Cheers

Jim

Such things of course always are subject to personal taste. To me, the Bahnhofstrasse decoration of last year was like ice-cold alcohol-free whiskey mixed with rhubarb-juice

Re: new Christmas lighting at Bahnhofstrasse Zürich

The new new ones looks crap IMHO. They are just so boring. The OPs picture is not how they look in real life.

The old new ones, which no-one liked, I thought were great - especially last year when they had got the programming sorted and the patterns were really impressive.

Damn those traditionalists.
