Masters in England or Switzerland?

Hello there everyone!

I applied for a Masters in Intl Affairs in St Gallen and London School of Economics. Now that Iv gotten into both I cant really decide which would be a better option considering the fact that LSE is much more pricier than HSG.

Would really look forward to your opinions about the standard of education in both universities and career opportunities in Europe with a degree from LSE or HSG?

Thanks!

Perhaps a silly question, but do you speak whatever language the course is delivered in in St Gallen?

I think you should also be looking at the overall cost of living between London and St Gallen if cost is important. But on a more fundamental level you are the one who is going to study there, why not come over and have a look and do some independent research rather than asking a random bunch of strangers - we don't know where you career/research interests lie.

If you want a simple answer, more people will have heard of LSE.

LSE's name has more cv cache i think and its students are heavily recruited. the university makes an effort to organise career fairs.

Re: Masters in England or Switzerland?

I have a masters from HSG and am pretty happy with it. If you plan to work in German speaking countries, HSG degree is more well known than that of LSE. Also, St. Gallen is a lovely student town. Really have great memories there ;-) But LSE has obviously better international reputation.

If they are both high quality degrees then there really is not much difference afterwards. A masters is a masters and provided its a decent school a couple of years after getting it it will make next to no difference on your employment prospects. The only distinction as one poster highlighted is that in the german speaking locations St Gallen will rate higher but beyond that employers will look and say yep tha person has a masters and not be overly interested where it was obtained

Re: Masters in England or Switzerland?

At Masters level you can choose between being taught in English or German at St Gallen. My son is currently studying his Masters in International Relations at St Gallen. He is currently doing his last semester in Shanghai under an exchange program. He is happy with the content of the program and the teaching.

The course is in English and they offer German classes as well so I get to learn a new language. The living costs come to the same its just the fees that's different. Iv been to Switzerland and I love the place but then I love England too which is why Im so confused lol !

Thank you everyone for the replies!

I have a different opinion: (Big Swiss) employers know well that the institution where the Master was obtained makes, in fact, all the difference. They know about LSE and St.Gallen, and they know that there are "Murphy and Bünzli Institutions" that deliver Masters, PhD's etc after payment as well.......

Both are worth. In this case I'd go with a different approach: get your graduation in the country where you want to use it / work afterwards.
I'd tend to say this could be a general rule in (western) Europe.

Good luck

Re: Masters in England or Switzerland?

Currently fees are about CHF2600 per annum. All living expenses are on top of this.
