Education system in Switzerland (facing choice of moving home or stay here longer)

All,

We are facing choice of staying here in Zurich a bit longer or moving back to UK. Main concern for us is education. My little girl will three years old soon and will start school in September 2015. In order to get into the school we want, we will need to plan the move well in advance to sort out housing, etc.

Heard a lot about pros and cons about education system here , but still don't have the full picture of how it works(the selection process for going to University). Could anybody kindly provide some information around this or point me to the right direction.

Thanks!

Your girl is not yet 3 and you can stay here 'a bit' longer.. So.. why to worry about university?? (unless 'a bit' longer means some 15 years)...

Anyway, here some info on Swiss Education System:

It depends on the canton.

Here, it depends on your grades at the end of the obligatory schooling (age 15), there is no prior division as in many other cantons.

Re: Education system in Switzerland (facing choice of moving home or stay here longer

In most areas of Switzerland, only about 10-20% of kids attend Gymnasium and enter University on that route. The vast majority do an apprenticeship after Grade 9. There are ways to enter university with additional schooling, even with an apprenticeship.
Your daughter is not yet three, consequently you really have no idea of how she will do in school. If you stay, you could still make the decision to move back to the UK when she is 11 or 12 years old with little issues, as long as her English remains strong. By that time you'd have some idea of which way she will want to go.
I would not base the decision to move solely on the choices of education at this stage.

Re: Education system in Switzerland (facing choice of moving home or stay here longer

Fromm the sublime to the ridiculous ... sorry. Some parents move here with teenagers and never ask themselves whether the system will be suitable for them- and you on the other hand, with a 3 year old who will have every opportunity to be fully bilingual by selection age- worry about university

If your child is bright, is encouraged to pick up the language to the fullest extent possible- he will do very well and Unis here are just as good and much cheaper than UK. So chill- enjoy- and give time to time. And there is nothing wrong with a great apprenticeship system that will lead to a proper and respectable/respected trade- with every opportunity to link back to Maturitšt and Uni afterwards if desired, is there? The UK system is currently such a mess...

Big reforms are underway in the Swiss system to make the selection between vocational and academic much later. New systme should be implemented in Neuchatel next year. Vocational and academic streams will be abolished, with only some subjects setted individually.

Re: Education system in Switzerland (facing choice of moving home or stay here longer

By the time your child gets to school, and certainly by the time of university, the HaromoS will have been implemented in most cantons, which will change quite a bit of the status quo of today. Only a few romande cantons have partially implemented this year. I suggest you read up on HarmoS, but then again by the time your child reaches univeristy level, likely more reforms and changes will be implemented.

Hi Swisscanmom, thank you for the information. Indeed, my daughter is so young and I would not have idea until later if she is academic or not, though she already told me she is interest in acting! Sure she will get new ideas next week, and the week after, and after we still have plenty time to think this through.

Thank you, Odile! I probably get way over my head to be worried about my daughter going to university now. I agree with you, the system here is actually good and it works. Not too much pressure on young people to push everybody to go to university. What I am worried is that if we stay here longer and my kids has adapted to the system here, it may cause problems when we move back to uk or other places. We have to admit that going to universities is still a reliable way to get a decent job in most countries.

In terms oflanguages, my daughter is bilingual already, but yes, it would be even better to master German(and/or French) as well. This is a great advantage for kids growing up here n Switzerland and one of the reasons for us wanting to stay here longer.

A lot of pros and cons... I will check out the system reform. This might change our decision.

Thanks again!
