Info you probably know backwards: moving from London with 3 kids

Hi everyone

I am new to this forum and hoping you might be ale to point me in the right direction(s)

I am re-locating to Geneva with a husband and 3 kids in May - July (still negotiating). I'll be working near the Jardin Botanique and we are looking to live towards Coppet, Fonnex, Tannay, Versoix. I have read all about shortage of housing but not anxious so much about that bit.

the bit I feel really anxious about is the childcare and schooling. In London, my twin girls (currently aged 2 and 2 months) would be eligible for 15 hours free nursery care from their 3rd birthday; we have a child minder here too. I think they will be ready for pre-school in Sept 2014 and was planning 3 days a week at a Montessori for them then.

My question is - Does Switzerland subsidise childcare in the same way as UK? Ive looked at a few and it looks really really expensive. Ive not had any luck online finding out any info on it.

As we will prob need an au pair too, Im worrying that things will end up being a bit of a struggle.

Thank you for any help!

Verity

Do a search on the forum for "childcare", there are many people that have asked the same question and it is covered in good detail.

Short answer is no. There is no childcare offered until children are old enough to start kindergarten. Some krippes (daycare) offer subsidised spaces but they are few and far between and your combined salary must be below quite a low level (which I doubt as you are talking about getting an au pair as well).

In short, likely no. Only some communes subsidise childcare, and this is a partial subsidy based on family income levels. Single working mothers at the low end of payscale would likely get some, but an expat family, presumably with expat salary, etc.. would likely not qualify. Also, note there is a shortage of childcare facilities as well, expect long waiting lists. To give an idea, for full time childcare for one child, full days, 5 days per week, expect around 2,500 chf. On the positive side, they start school at 4, but with a lot of gaps, so the full time childcare costs would be short term.

Some employers have discounted rates at specific childcare stations (creshs), so ask your future employer.
You also get a small discount for the 2nd and 3rd kid.

You could also look into getting an au pair (400-1200 chf/month), as your kids will only have just started speaking, and now you're bringing them into a new language. The au pair could speak english.

The school system here isn't geared for 2 full time working parents.
