Courses where they teach in english

Hi,

I have moved to schaffhausen from india and have little german knowledge.

I am not very keen on taking up a german language course but need to engross my time in learning something creative or intellectual. Since i am not good at understanding and speaking german, I would like to know if there is anything in zurich or around that i can learn in english.

Thanks,
Anita S

P.S.: Back in India I was a Interior Designer and loved to do something creative. Creativity would be my first preference, but if not then any other course where they teach in English is also welcome.

Re: Courses where they teach in english

You could try checking with the MigrosClub School and see if they have any teachers teaching courses where you could communicate in English, even if the course is taught in German. They have quite an extensive range of subjects so you might be lucky.

There's bound to be classes in Zurich and probably in surrounding areas as well.

Try Curios Courses. They have a fairly eclectic mix of short courses.

Re: Courses where they teach in english

Thanks a lot all of you.

I have already checked with the school of migros in schaffhausen but unfortunately they do not have any courses where they teach in english. All they teach is in german.

But not I will definitely check on zurich unviversity, school of migros in zurich and curios. :-) Thanks a ton.

Regards,
Anita S

Re: Courses where they teach in english

You'd have to check with MigrosClub School directly to see if any courses have teachers who speak English. That way you might be able to take a course which, although in German, the teacher could also explain things to you in English. That was my thinking.

Re: Courses where they teach in english

Anita are you looking for a course to lead to a degree, certification, etc.? Or are you 'just' looking for something fun and stimulating for personal enrichment?

If the former, you might also want to look into Open University. But of course distance learning is a solitary pursuit, so if the social aspect is important to you there is that to consider. If you want to pursue a post graduate degree, many at Swiss universities are conducted in English. If you want to go down that road there are many threads on the subject.

If you are looking more for activities that provide personal enrichment, you might want to consider clubs as well as courses. Art/music/culture groups, cooking groups, book clubs, etc. can provide intellectual stimulation in an informal setting. Look through the EF social calendar - you migh find something of interest to get you started. Or organize a group yourself. Additionally, one established english-language club in Zürich offering activities that might interest you is ZIWA, the Zürich International Woman's Association, http://www.ziwa.com There are other similar expat groups as well.

Hope you find what you are looking for...
