Maybe a silly question, but...[where is the school entrance]

How do you actually get in to a school to speak to someone?

I went today to ask about enrolling and I tried SIX different entrances- most of them seemed to lead to cloakrooms one of them did look like it had a desk, but nobody was there

It feels very bizarre coming from the UK that anyone can just walk into a school and no-one notices I'm used to knowing exactly where the main door is because it's the only one which isn't behind two sets of padlocked gates and there are at least 2 people on the front desk who would need to buzz you in through the security door if you wanted to go any further than the entrance! Serious question, do Swiss schools actually have reception desks? Is it possible that I somehow missed it? Argh what to do! Help!

Re: Maybe a silly question, but...

Silly question - most village schools don't have any clerical or admin staff.

The telephone is usually in the staff room and the head teacher is a just a teacher who teaches, like the rest of them.

You need to find out who you specifically need to speak to and track down which classroom they're in.

....... and no gates, or security - people just come and go at will.

Re: Maybe a silly question, but...

You don't need to go to the school to enroll your kids. It will happen automatically after you have registered them. Expect a letter in the post.

Plus, at least in the country, there won't be any choice, at least not for you. Your kids go to the local school.

Your contact will be their class teacher. There really isn't a head teacher as you understand it from England and all the admin is handled by either a separate (elected) Schulgemeinde if there is one or possibly by a department of the general Gemeinde if they have merged the two (varies from place to place).

Re: Maybe a silly question, but...

What the others have said. Look up the school website and phone the number on there to make an appointment to see the 'head'.
It's perfectly normal for schools to be open here.

Also you can try as search for schule + the name of the town where you are and chances are you'll end up on the web site of the education authorities for your area.
If you do nothing, they'll be in touch anyway once you have registered at the gemeinde. So no stress.

Our local school admin is next door to the town (gemeinde)admin. You should be able to find contact info on the relevant local town website.

Re: Maybe a silly question, but...[where is the school entrance]

Primary schools here to not have a Head/master/mistress, nor a reception area or receptionist. Our area has 11 villages, including 11 primary schools- and 1 secondary school with 6th Form (Lycée). The Headmistress and 3 deputies are based at the latter- with the offices and receptionists, assistants, there.

Yes, that's what we thought, but we asked specifically at the town hall when we registered here yesterday and were told that they don't send for them, we had to go in to speak to them and she suggested I do that today or whenever

I know they go to the local school- the local one is the one we went to

Ah, see when I thought I was asking a silly question, I thought you were all going to say "of course there is a reception!" and I'd missed it! Feel better now, that it wasn't just me missing it!

Re: Maybe a silly question, but...[where is the school entrance]

Hmm. I'm on the website, I'm relying on my browser's translatey thing though One of the pages says the school has no vacancies, I hope that's not fully true though because it is the only school in the town! Not sussed it out yet, but looking at the site and going off what the gemeinde lady said, I'm wondering if it's something we have to be more proactive about. We just moved UK schools in January and I'd expected the schools to do everything for us, I'd been surprised to find nothing seemed to happen unless I went about sorting it myself! They've missed a months' education already and while I think they can "afford" the time-out, it's probably enough.. I'd really like to at least get them starting on the first day of term in academic year 14/15.

ETA: YES! I have found the "sekretariat" details, there is an email address, should I send an email instead? Emails I can take my time to translate; or can I expect the person on the phone number given to speak English?

I would call. Most of the time they can find someone who speaks some English, at least at our school. And I have found that e-mail gets responded to very slowly here sometimes.

Our school has a principal btw, I think this depends on the canton and school board. There is no reception area however. If you have no luck with the call, I'd go and try to find the Lehrerzimmer (teacher's lounge) so someone can direct you to the right person.

That would be job-openings in my book.

You're in SZ. Likely you're not the first, the last or the only expat they've met...
;-)
As others have said: just call. Email can take days to respond. Or get stuck in the spam-filter, if it thinks your try at German looks like a Nigerian 419-scam...
