Year 10 schools in Zurich

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help?
I have a 14 year old that sadly left it to late to find an IT apprenticeship this year and was wondering it there are any year 10 schools in Zurich that offer both IT and media places? Is there a list I can view to see what is available and (I'm a single parent) do they cost or can I apply for financial help?
thank you for talking the time to answer my question and pointing me in the right direction :-)

Re: Year 10 schools in Zurich

Even though they are very young, why not try a Praktikumsstelle for 12 months.
I quickly found a few in your area here, and searched "englisch".

Re: Year 10 schools in Zurich

I am pretty sure there is a berufmatura for IT but it has an exam/cutoff date that is earlier than the other options - have you looked at FMS or BMS?

As an employer/supervisor, I would much prefer my apprentices to do a 1 year practicum first.

it is almost, but not quite too late to apply to sit the Gymi or FMS exam. Otherwise, you need to check with your local school and careers advice service to see what they suggest.

Is he in Sek a, b, or c. If sek b or c, it may be possible to do 10th year in sek a. My daughter has a few students added to her sek a who have already done 3 years in sek b/c.

Either way, apprenticeships are hard to come by, especially this late in the year...and if he does not turn 15 to late in the year, I assume he is already at the lower end of the age profile... I know someone whose son just started the short gymnasium for a second time, and he is 17.... So if he graduates successfully he will complete a matura at 20-21, and he is not considered 'too old'.

If he is very keen, and you cannot get entry to a suitable course, then he might need to design his own 'study programme' for next year, and work out how to get entry to the IT stream of the 'berufsmatura'....

Are you in contact with the careers advice service? Our school invites us to several information evenings each year, and it has been quite helpful (our child's key teacher, whilst great, had no idea about what to do for FMS as she had never had a student go for that exam before...she has only 4-5 years teaching experience even though she is a 'mature' adult)....

10th grade schools are called "Berufswahlschule" (vocational prep schools). There are several of them in the canton of ZH. Their primary aim is to find an apprenticeship for every student and further their education.
Google for "Berufswahlschule, Berufswahljahr". See Bülach's BWS homepage www.bws-buelach.ch

Re: Year 10 schools in Zurich

Perhaps a bit costly (approx. CHF 18K/year), but you may want to have a look at Bénédict School in Zurich.

This private school offers a 10th year IT course, which covers the same first-year curriculum of an apprenticeship (software application developer, in German "Software-Applikationsentwickler").

Re: Year 10 schools in Zurich

Hello, Found this thread & wondering how it went with the OP's son. Did he end up in the 10th year or did he choose a different option? We are in a similar state after this year's Gymi results. Our son's first attempt but he unfortunately couldn't succeed. He is in Sek A3. Previous 2 attempts were missed as he was still picking up his DE skills. He's September born so we have found out he has some age advantage. Even after the 10th year he could possibly attempt Gymi once more. We feel he's still too young for a Praktikum. We have scheduled a meeting with the counselor in our area but if anyone has experience with this situation & can suggest a route for our dear child I'd be grateful.
Many thanks.
