Nyon - Secondary School - Roche-Combe vs. Nyon-Marens

Hello,

I have been in touch with the two following secondary schools in Nyon, and have a question. Whereas, Roche-Combe does offer additional French courses for Newcomers, there is no such thing at Nyon-Marens, which seems to be the only disadvantage in comparison to the first one.

Has anyone been to one of these schools, and if so, would you recommend them?
If somebody has experience with both schools - which one would be better?

NYON-MARENS

ROCHE-COMBE

Thanks in advance.

Local friends have had good experiences with both schools, although I always got the impression that Marens was considered the better of the two...

However, under HarmoS, the whole system is changing to a middle school/high school set-up in 2016 whereby children complete their 'First Primary Cycle' in primary school, go to Roche-Combe for four years to complete their 'Second Primary Cycle', then all go on to Marens for 'Secondary' which is currently being extended:

I can't find any further information on this, so can't confirm details or timing, but I'd imagine it would be pretty vital concerning your choice of school. I'm sure the admin at either school would be able to advise you further if you called them.

There's a really useful overview of the HarmoS changes in English in canton Vaud (written for Genolier, although I think it holds for Nyon too) that suggests all establishments will provide intensive French for non-native speakers.

Just realised that I've made that sound like gospel - it's just what I gleaned from conversation with a couple of Mums I knew from the playground, so pretty much gossip and hearsay. School authorities will be able to tell you for sure!

Hi Rowan,

Thank you for the extensive information. I do very much appreciate it!

Off topic: I read somewhere in the forum here that there is a problem with drug dealers in Nyon, and you have to be careful when you send your children to school every day. Is this still the case, and would you recommend to pick up the children even from the secondary school, to ensure they won't get into trouble?

No idea - used to see dealers every day when the little ones went to Ecole de Centre Ville, as they would hang out by the Promenade d'Italie. It took a big public campaign to move them on from there (Nyon even borrowed a drugs dog from Lausanne, or so I heard). They must've gone somewhere, as there was clearly a thriving market - I'd guess near the station/gymi, but don't know for sure...

HI I see this is an old post but for new people who have the same question. I was born in Zurich and moved to Nyon when I was 7 . My teacher at Marens put me in a smaller class to learn French and with a kid who spoke Swiss German .
