Starting state school after term has started

My 4 year old would be due to start school in September here in the UK but I'm looking at a role in Switzerland (Vaud). Ideally we'd be on the ground for her to start in late Aug with her peers but that timing is very tight, and, I suspect unlikely.

Is it a big deal for her to start a few weeks into the term? Guessing she'll be in P1 which I understand isn't compulsory (though most do attend).

Also I'm assuming we can't enrol her in a school until we have a permanent address? Abd housing being what it is between lausanne and vevey means that that might not be sorted very quickly....

You have to enroll her a soon as she is a Swiss resident. The School must take her and offer a place. A non permanent address should not be an issue. But when you move to another commune your child will be assigned to a new kindergarten. Means, she may miss one or two dear friends at the old place.

AFAIK P1 is mandatory. All kids which are at 4 years old on July 31st should start with P1.

Ok thanks. She's 4 already so looks like it's mandatory which is fine - she needs it!

Would it be that much of an issue if she started after August?

No. P1 is not so much about strict learning, it is more about still to be a kid, be an explorer, interact with other kids, fine motor skills (painting, drawing, craft), and the first step to independence.

Great ok. She's being going to preschool here in the uk 9-3 3x per week and that is very much what they focus on so I'm hoping she'd find it similar (despite the language) and slot in regardless of when we might arrive.

its mornings 8.30-12 and off on wednesday and all day on tuesday in the first year. She should get accelerated french classes at some point to help integrate.

There are targets for the first year, like being able to count to 25 or something, but they are very very low. the main idea is to learn to play, interact, be polite and the like.

Are all schools the same hours?

She's very keen to go to "Big School" here so hopefully will be as keen in Switzerland...

Im really not certain but I think its likely that its common across Vaud at least. we live very near vevey and all the local schools around here follow that timeline.

Once a year is up she starts doing more time but in the first year Im pretty sure you will be the same as us timewise.
