German or Swiss German in public school?

My 9 years old boy has started public school in Riehen last semester.

He is coming from bilingual French-English school in the French part of Switzerlan and we are happy about the choice we've done in changing for the public school.

Anyway I still have a big doubt. He is learning German or Swiss German? I do not speak any German myself, we are Italian mother tongue and I'm feeling a bit lost .....

Re: German or Swiss German in public school?

He will be learning both. Classroom language is generally German, I say generally, because some teachers may speak Swiss German in sports classes, also some songs may be in Swiss German during music classes. But the language of instruction is German for all other subjects. Of course during recess the kids around him will be speaking Swiss German.
When my kids arrived 3 years ago with no German, it was very interesting: My son adopted Swiss German as his preferred language, whereas my daughter prefers German, and though she has been able to understand it for a long time, is only now starting to speak Swiss German with her friends. I'd say they learned both dialects simultaneously.

Re: German or Swiss German in public school?

The language of teaching is supposed to be German, but often it is Swiss German (my 3 kids were educated in Baselland). German lessons teach (Swiss) High German.
