schools in Canton Zug

We may be moving to Zug (or near) in Summer. Our daughter will be 14 (just) completing yr9 in English system. She is bi-lingual English/German, but not writing enough to be fully confident. Are there any Gymnasium in area with a bi-lingual programme leading to the IB, or would she be able to cope in German only at school. Would prefer a local Swiss school, as is better for integration, as we will live there for a long period. She is keen athlete and is generally very sporty. we have a son at boarding school in Switzerland, but she is not too keen on boarding.
Also will consider private schools

Re: schools in Canton Zug

Dear Highlands,
the Gymnasium in Zug does offer a bilingual programme for a small number of gifted and talented students with a very high standard of German (both spoken and written), so this options is not very likely for a child that has not gone through the Swiss system, unless she is an exceptionally academic child with very good grades overall. Entry into Gymnasium over here is highly selective! In Kanton Zug, only the Montana Institut or the international school of Zug and Lucerne (ISZL) offer an IB. If she can secure a place at one of those private schools, this seems like the best option as entry into secondary might be tricky at that age (intensive German is only offered up to grade 9). Alternatively, she could do one year at a local secondary and do a so-called bridge year (Brückenangebot) to get her written German up to speed before entering vocational training and education or a higher secondary school.
Good luck!
Stefanie

Re: schools in Canton Zug

If she wants to study at a university in Switzerland then the Swiss Matura is a better option than the IB.
She is probably a year late for the Kantonschule in Zug, but the Kantonschule in Menzingen (just out of Zug) has a four year program. If you choose to reside in another Kanton, there will be other choices.
Private schools: Institute Montana has a bilingual Matura program me as well as IB
ISZL is the local international school
All the private schools have their advantages but can make it difficult to integrate.
Being sporty is not so cool here as in NZ or UK. If she is not so strong academically, there is a lot to be said for doing the Swiss apprenticeship route

Re: schools in Canton Zug

Thanks . Yes, will look at Matura. She has ambitions to be a VET, and can probably achieve that. As a family, we try to integrate, altho I have a lot of work to do on my German.
Hadn't thought of Menzingen, will look at it.
I did see that Zug has a rugby team, so hoping there are pubs to watch the rugby when on, if they allow a kilted Scot in that is !!!!

weggis

Hi, just moving in here. Wondered if any Scots/UK/ football/ rugby fans in area. Enjoy a beer/dram, walking / skiing, although now on gentle runs, can no longer keep up with the late teens/ 20 yr olds
Are there pubs that show the rugby/ premier league?
Enjoy a good Burns/ St Andrews night and can do recitations
