Ok, let's say that I manage to find an internship during my Master's. Does it make it easier then, after I graduate, for that company to hire me ? Or it does not change anything ?
It doesn't change anything.

Sorry, I know you're trying to find loopholes, but I can promise you there are next to none.

Re: University Choice PLEASE HELP !!!

St. Gallen and Lausanne are the most "employable" universities in Switzerland (outside of ETHZ which is on a different level). If you are non-eu, the above two are your best bets for finding jobs after graduation.

That's an interesting statement, particularly because you mention Lausanne, which is no better or worse than Zurich, Basel, Bern, whatever. Unless you mean EPFL, which is comparable to ETH in many ways. The only reason graduates appear to be more "employable" is because of the nature of their degrees, which are scientific and technical, hence there's an increased chance they land in specialized or niche jobs.

Someone who wants to study marketing won't go to ETH or EPFL, and no matter which other university they end up going to, it won't make the field any more specialized or economically significant.

Re: University Choice PLEASE HELP !!!

Correct, I did mean EPFL while referring to Lausanne.
Also correct that the high employability is mainly due to the emphasis on STEM degrees from these universities.

Ah ok then we agree It read to me as if you wanted to say if OP went to study marketing at the Uni Lausanne, they would somehow have a higher chance of getting a job than if they went to let's say Zurich, which isn't true.

At the end of the day, there are few differences in quality of education between universities in Switzerland (the real ones of course) and they are more or less interchangeable, save for some exceptions as said in previous comments.

I know that a lot of young people go to Zurich or Basel to work because these Cantons are much more strong economically, but money isn't the most important thing for me...I would rather live in a nice laid-back city such as Lugano than living under stress in a big city such as Zurich or Basel, and that's also why I would like to leave Montreal. I know that's not a common point of view for people of my age, but that's how I feel

So go for Lugano (all the students in St Gallen are jealous of the life-style & climate, all the local students are worrying about having to travel north to get a job) enjoy your time doing a masters, start networking immediately, use your Canadian/Quebecois connections as much as possible - it is not my field but there are plenty of Switzerland- Canada commercial connections. Switzerland is even more complicated than Quebec as to who gets preferential treatment- there are no definite answers to most of your questions, but where there is a will......

Thank you all for your responses !

Do you guys think that a Master in finance or in economics will allow me to find a job more easily and get a work permit or is it the same situation as with the Master in marketing/management ?

Re: University Choice PLEASE HELP !!!

Ok, I contacted USI and here is their answer :

We analyzed your case, USI graduates from third country national (non-EU/CH) (from the Master in Marketing) have found jobs both in Switzerland and in Europe.
For example, another Canadian Marketing USI graduate found a job in the German part of Switzerland.

For third country national (non-EU/CH) the companies need to set a good salary and show that the employee has some knowledges/capabilities that other people do not have. Big or international companies are used to these procedures.

So I guess that at the end of the day it depends for each person...
I think I'll go ahead and apply to USI and we'll see what happens
Thank you all for your help !!

Re: University Choice PLEASE HELP !!!

Hi,

you have probably already made your mind, but still it may be of interest to you.
Although you are completely right saying that finding a job depends on a person, do not underestimate what USI has responded: " the companies need to set a good salary and show that the employee has some knowledges/capabilities that other people do not have".
From what I see in recent years setting a good salary for students from 3rd countries is not a case in Ticino.
I know several ex students of USI. The ones who are not Swiss had to leave as the salaries offered were not enough for them to be granted a working permit.
The market is small.

Regarding what ex students are saying: in comparison to renowned Swiss universities (incl St.Gallen) the atmosphere is very relaxed.

I love Ticino, its climate, dimensions and food. But I would not recommend it to a young motivated person.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Re: University Choice PLEASE HELP !!!

Hello,

Thank you for your response! Indeed, I think I will go to USI, as others have said, with an open mind, and try to get the most out of my Master and my 2 years in Lugano. After that, if I can't find a job in Ticino, it's not the end of the world...I will look for one in the rest of Switzerland. Do you know people in the same situation as me (3rd country nationals that have gone to USI) and that have found jobs in other parts of Switzerland ? Is USI well regarded in the rest of Switzerland?

Thank you !

Both questions have been answered by multiple people, so not sure why you're asking the same again. The answers are not going to change.
