Top British Schools in Zurich

Hello. My family will be moving to Zurich starting in the 2019/20 school year, and we would like to start looking at schools from now. We will be moving to there from the UK. We are wondering what are considered the top British schools in Zurich? Our company will be paying the tuition costs (our children are aged 7, 10, and 14). So far, it seems one of the better British schools is International School - Zurich North. Are there any other good British schools worth looking into?

Not interested in other areas of Switzerland at this point, or non-British schools unless there are no other options (I heard good things about Zurich International School, but it looks more American focused than British). But from what I can tell, ISZN looks to be a good school, my husband and I are just curious if other options exist (options are always a good thing!).

Hello there!

I wouldn't call the International Schools British or American necessarily. They offer things like IB and AP rather than GCSEs for example. The teaching is in English.

You may want to consider Hulls's School. http://www.hullschool.ch/en/hulls-school/. They do international GCSEs and A-Levels.

I'd like to urge you to consider at least reading the many threads on this forum which deal with the realistic option of sending your children to the local schools.

Too many immigrants arrive imagining that they'll be here for only a year or two, and that in that time they will have no need to integrate with the locals.

It is, indeed, possible to conduct one's life entirely in the expat bubble, though those who do pass by so much of the Swiss experience. The children, in particular, miss out on the opportunities of social interaction on many levels, especially in the clubs and societies in the area, and with the other kids who live nearby. There's a lot to be said for affording them the opportunity to go to local schools. For that, you might like to select the area in which you'd live.

the wealthy parents in Zürich usually send their children to private schools. Public schools have an increasingly bad reputation especially these schools that have become ghettos. Mobbing and violence is the rule of law in such schools

I think this is realistic advice for the youngest, but I am not sure for the older two?

OP says the children are 7, 10, and 14. Depending on when their birthdays fall, the oldest could be 16 and the middle child 12 by the time they arrive in Switzerland. That may be a bit late to slot into a local school and be successful, especially if there is a language barrier (OP doesn't mention what languages the children already speak) and/or if they're expected to pick a uni-track vs. apprenticeship track immediately.

It is worth looking at local schools, of course, but also wise to be realistic about the possibilities based on the ages of the children.

Only the not very smart kids of Zurich parents - rich or not so rich - go to private schools, where they all feel better with other not so very gifted colleagues around.

Truth.

OP - not sure about "British schools", but plenty of international schools catering to expats' needs and offering IBs. The youngest could easily go to local schools, older two probably not unless they all speak fluent German. Hundreds of threads in the forum on pros and cons of various schools, best to start there.

Re: Top British Schools in Zurich

Thanks for the replies. While I do appreciate the feedback, we prefer not to put in our kids in local schools, mainly as being being British citizens, we'd prefer them to be in a school that offers a strong British curriculum, since we are definitely not planning to emigrate to Switzerland.

Also, this isn't the first time we have lived overseas, we did spend 4 years previous in Kuwait. We had our kids (the oldest, and then our second once she was old enough) in a private school w/British curriculum. I'm not sure why people assume we would be in an expat bubble. The school our kids were in had a mixed student population. There were kids from the UK but also local kids as well as kids from over a dozen other countries as well (kids from Australia, India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Turkey, Canada, Bangladesh, to name some) so I felt they got the best of all worlds.

I'm hoping they'll have the same experience in Zurich as they did in Kuwait; a school with a good British curriculum where their fellow students will be a mix of UK citizens, locals, and other countries as well.

As per info on ISZN, they seem to offer much of that, British curriculum plus students from two dozen countries (hopefully there are Swiss included in that mix as well).

So while the opinions about the local system are welcome, it is not exactly fit our needs at this point.

The suggestion regarding Hulls's School is very appreciated and we will be looking into it. If anybody has other suggestions regarding British curriculum schools in Zurich, please let me know.

Thanks for all the replies either way!

Re: Top British Schools in Zurich

I've never heard of any British curriculum schools in Zurich, as you'd find in the Middle/Far East. Even ISZN does the IB programme up until GCSE. UK boarding school is a popular option for A Levels.

ISZN only has a couple of hundred students from ages 3-18, naturally this will somewhat limit educational/social opportunities for older secondary students. It is a small school, which for some students would be perfect, but it is in an industrial development by a busy motorway.

My friend's Swiss son had a good experience at Hull's School, it is popular with students who've been to local schools who are strong on either sciences/humanities and would struggle to get the Swiss Matura. But the vast majority of students are Swiss, I'm not sure how it would be for a non German speaking student.

If you'd consider IB then ZIS has a good reputation.

Re: Top British Schools in Zurich

Good morning all

I recently spoke to someone who happens to attend Hull's School (studying his IGCSEs). He is not Swiss, doesn't speak German or other national languages, and according to him all his teachers are native speakers from the US, Aus and UK. For sure OP can ask about this . I'm not sure how many non-swiss or swiss attend the school

Problem with it is I think maybe only the eldest would be eligible due to their age. I'm not sure about this. If OP wants all kids at the same school that might not be ideal.

Are they really more expensive than private schools in the UK, especially in London area? About £30.000 a year- + uniform, all sorts of official kit for sport, etc, compulsory trips, etc, etc, etc.
