Youth string lessons, orchestras in Zurich

Hello -

I've looked through the forums and haven't found a lot on this topic. We're considering a move to Zurich next summer with a 9yo cellist who plays with an ensemble and orchestra and is beginning to study composition. Can anyone tell me about the level of string instruction in Zurich? Is there any pre-conservatory program? Strong youth orchestra? Can a German language learner participate or is language a barrier? I don't know how far he'll want to pursue cello studies but he's in a good place right now, loving his instrument, and I'd like to help him keep the momentum going.

Thank you!

Carrie

Re: Youth string lessons, orchestras in Zurich

Hi Carrie,

There are a number of public music schools in canton Zurich that provide music lessons and opportunities to be play in groups or orchestras. For Zurich city this is the MKZ, the website is https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/ssd/de/index/mkz.html

Details on Ensembles/Orchestras: https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/ssd/de/...mationen0.html

We live out of the city and our local music school is http://www.mska.ch/. There are various levels of string group and the orchestra plays at a good level, although most of the children in it are aged 14+. There will be more variety of groups in the city music school.

My child started lessons speaking no German and most teachers will speak at least a little English, but learning German will help for the groups.

If you are staying long term and your child is very serious about music and wants to train for at least 10 hours a week mon-fri, there is the opportunity to go to a special public secondary school linked to the music school: https://www.kuszh.ch/

You might be interested in the Zürcher Jugendorchester.

I think most of the young musicians are pre-conservatory level.

I don't know what they are like these days, but I had a GF who played with them back in the 1990s and so I got to go to many of their concerts.

I don't know if he is still doing it, but back then the conductor was an energetic young fellow, a real musical genius. He was full of innovative ideas and was absolutely motivating for the young musicians. I think Studer was his name.

Pretty impressive stuff for such young people.

Re: Youth string lessons, orchestras in Zurich

Thanks, this is so helpful! I'll read through the links. Looks like the Jugendorchester starts at age 15 so my son is a few years out, but the performing arts school is a closer-term possibility. And it looks like I need to learn German double time to make sense of everything. I speak French, but a lot of my online research shows info only in German.
