goldsmith training/ apprenticeship for English speaker?

Hello all,

I am 25 years old and wanting to train as a Goldsmith - I'm wanting to learn in Switzerland because there are really good training programs and institutions.

I already have a degree in Journalism so can't afford University again - looking for Apprenticeship opportunities where you earn while you learn, or any courses that aren't thousands per year...

I have been contacting some schools/goldsmiths in Geneva, La Chaux-de-Fonds and Basel areas and they mostly said i had to learn in French or German, which is what i expected....

One goldsmith in Basel said he could take me on but it wouldn't be till 2020. I'm ideally looking for something 2019.

I'm just wondering if ANYONE knows if and where there are English speaking training/learning opportunities in the jewellery/goldsmith field, Switzerland?
Or am i barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks!

A job board for trainees yousty.ch currently lists four Goldschmied traineeship openings:

If none of these works out, you might also consider traineeships in related areas listed at the bottom of the above link.

Re: goldsmith training/ apprenticeship for English speaker?

You need the local language as an aprenticeship involves going to school as well!

The other problem is that it doesn't pay enough for you to live, you would need to have enough money for that in the bank.

Hi Charlotte

Sorry to disappoint you but yes, you are barking up the wrong tree. An apprenticeship is by Definition (by law) a combination of schooling and Learning on the Job. This means, you will have to attend School. And the School is Held in German / French / Italian (depending on where in Switzerland it is located). And in order to be able to follow you will Need C1, at least. Sorry.

Re: goldsmith training/ apprenticeship for English speaker?

Thanks for the quick responses.

st2lemans and irish_temptation You've confirmed my inclination that i may have been wishful thinking... ha

mullhollander i have been on the yousty.ch site and contacted a few of the goldsmiths on there and same problem of language barrier, thanks though.

My aim is to live somewhere like Switzerland, but i shall train in the UK, take language classes alongside - to hopefully one day own my own studio.

A girl can dream!
