Kitas in Bern - new

Hello to all of you!

I read everything I could find on the Forum about Kitas but I still have few questions so I was hoping that maybe someone of you can provide some useful information.

I have a 3.5 year old child. We live in Bern and we applied for few Kitas but in most of them there is no space right now (or any time soon). So far we got positive responses from Kita Smallworld and Kita Globegarden (Parkterrase).

I was wondering does anyone of you have some kind on information about those two Kitas? We went to see both of them. Smallworld seems small and I got feeling that they are not structured enough. Globegarden seems better and I actually liked it, but then I read that many others are not satisfied with their way of work. Some mentioned things like fast changing people who work there and so on... Only problem is that I couldn't find any information about Parkterasse itself, people were mostly writing about GG Kitas in Zurich and Basel. And none of those information were new.

One more important thing is that my kiddo doesn't speak German/French or English. For that reason, and a fact that he will have his 4th birthday at the end of July, we will leave him one more year in Kita instead of entering the formal obligated 2 years of Kindergarten. It is important to us that he learns (swiss)german and that people working in Kita have a patience and will to help him adjust to new environment and language. We wouldn't like him to change 5 different locations before finding right one.

Do you guys have any recommendations? What are your experiences? And do you have any useful information about above mentioned two kitas?

I will really appreciate any information.

Kind regards and thank you

I do not have experience with these two kitas, but I used to work in one. My biggests advice is to go with your gut instinct. Even with Kitas that belong to a chain like GG it really comes down to how it is run on a local level. That you have not found complaints online for the Berne location might just mean that there aren't any. For an almost 4 year old structure will be important. Is the only reason for not putting him in Kindergarten the language or do you feel he is not ready on an emotional level? If it is just the language, I'd be inclined to put him in Kindergarten, as he will get proper DaZ (German as a second language) lessons there.

In Bern a 3.5 year old isnít yet old enough for kindergarten.

As for the daycare I agree with going with gut instinct. I found Globegarden in ZH a bit slapdash and over-selling themselves but that was quite a few years ago, and theyíre still in business and expanding so they must have found their groove by now.

Thank you, Swisscanmom. Yes, you are right - maybe there is no complaints because there isn't any... To be honest, never thought about it that way. That is why other people opinions are great.

There are two main reason (except language) why I would like him to stay in Kita:

1. We aren't sure will we stay or leave. Probably we will know by the end of year.

2. As a professor of pedagogy (not that it matters, just pointing out that I have some ability to roughly estimate his capacities), I think it will be better for him to wait one more year because of emotional development, concentration and so on (although I know they aren't supposed to sit still the same way they are in school). If he was born 12 days later, he would be "obligated" to enter first year of KG next summer, not his one.

So when it all sums up, I am more inclined to leave him in Kita. And, yes, my gut is telling me it would be best decision... Just wasn't sure about those two particular Kitas.

I know, but he will turn 4 before July 31st, so actually, from what I heard he would have to start 1st year of KG in August this year. I spoke with someone from Town and they told me that information so it is checked. Also, they said it is no problem at all to leave him in Kita one more year because he is "on border" with his birthdate.

Yes, all you have to do is to tell them you will be keeping im back. It is that easy in canton Berne. In that case I would go with GG. Good Luck!
