Tagesschule in Zurich - your experiences?

Hello all,

I am writing to see what peoples' experiences have been with Tagesschule in Zurich.

It seems to be rolling out in phases here. At the informational meeting last night, people seemed quite concerned about a number of things, including having enough downtime for kids, food quality/not being able to come home for lunch, schedule/program, lack of autonomy, etc.

I never thought of school as anything other than full day, coming from the US. I went to a public school where, from 1st grade on, we had school from around 8-3. KG was half day (but only 1 year).

I thought it was great - learning of course, but also music, art, gym/sports, lunch with my friends from class, recess, quiet time... Days were structured but not overly so, so you knew generally what to expect and when, teachers were consistent.

I think the Tagesschule concept in theory sound good and seems to be a more stable option for the kids (rather than shuttling around for lunch and other activities). But I would welcome your practical experience with it, perhaps it is different than what I have in mind.

Thanks in advance!

Your viewing it from your experience, to Swiss people it is new, so naturally they are worried about it. For some kids I am sure a Tagesschule is great and they love it, for others, it is just more time spent at a place they dislike. My own daughter loved coming home for lunch and having some afternoons off in comparison to her Canadian school.

Re: Tagesschule in Zurich - your experiences?

Thank you for your reply. Do you have experience with the Tagesschule setup here? There are a number that seem to be in the testing phase.

I know that a lot will depend on the kids' experience with school in general, but I am wondering practically and organizationally, how people have found it.

I am aware that I might have a different idea of the Tagesschule concept, which is why I am asking how it works here in Switzerland/Zurich. It was unclear from the informational meeting for the Tagesschule in our area, it seems like many things still need to figured out?

Re: Tagesschule in Zurich - your experiences?

It's not new here, it existed in some areas of Lugano (among other places) when my wife was a child 40-50 years ago, but even now it's not everywhere, certainly not in our village or the neighboring ones, but does exist where my wife's daughter lives.

I do not have experiences here with it. Sounds like they are unsure what it will look like and trying to figure out how to even make it work. It is not as easy as just changing school hours, you need lunch rooms, play rooms, staffing, etc...

Re: Tagesschule in Zurich - your experiences?

I have three kids in one of the local tagesschules in Zurich. I love it. My kids do struggle with some of the long days but for us it's been great. Admittedly as with all schools it is dependent on many factors. The school my kids attend is relatively small, (my child in 3rd class has 15kids in their class, my child in 1st class has 11 kids in their class, my child in kindergarten has 20kids in their class), the principal is really good and the teachers all seem to be great as well. There are lots of support staff and so far I have been quite impressed with the lunches they provide.
This year they have started "no homework" which also seems to be good but will have to see how that progresses.

Re: Tagesschule in Zurich - your experiences?

My son has been in public Tagesschule in Zurich since KG. Funny enough, the school had to downsize some of its services in transitioning to Tagesschule 2025 this year.

As others have said, for many Swiss people, the concept is new and many worry about kids being overstimulated and tired with not enough downtime.

Personally, for my son, Tagesschule in general and this school specifically is a fantastic fit on all levels, and the fact that he's in school all day with incorporated after school care (he stays until 5) makes my life as a full-time working single mother very easy.

Nothing but good things to say about the transition to Tagesschule 2025
