Re: Thalwil vs Langnau am Albis

What aspect is important to you?

To me the most difference between Langnau a.A. and Thalwil is living in town/living closer to the nature and using public transport vs. driving a car to get anywhere (bigger supermarkets, kids free time activities etc). I personally wouldn't live in Langnau a.A. because I don't like to drive, but there you might probably have a possibility to buy a newly built house with a nice view to the mountains. However L.a.A. has a swimming pool, while Thalwil hasn't (the kids are taken to Gattikon by minubus for the swimming lesson). But we have a lake in Thalwil. So there are always pros and cons.

I'm looking for some statistical numbers on education by municipality every few years only to find out that they changed the way they present this statistics yet again. I've tried to search today and the only relative number to the quality of education I have found is "Schül. Mittelschule [pro 1000 Einw.]". I even didn't find any data on Mittelschulequote (MSQ), which was easy to find few years ago. Anyway, based on what I've found Thalwil and L.a.A. have about the same numbers so I assume that in average the quality of education is about the same.

I personally quite happy with the schools in Thalwil (my daughter changed school after the 1st grade because of the move and my son is in KG belonging to yet another school so I basically have some experience to all the 3 schools in Thalwil). My opinion that as Langnau and Thalwil have very small difference and are very close to each other the most important factor would be a teacher, but this is a pure lottery.

You have to take into account that to find and get a decent family apartment in Thalwil is very difficult (I'm not sure about L.a.A.), so you have to start looking early and be very pro-active.

Re: Thalwil vs Langnau am Albis

I found some numbers here for 2017 that might be interesting:

Quote: Übertritte öff. Sekundarschule / öff. Gymnasium ab 2. Sek (in %) Thalwil - 12.6 L.a.A - 10.8
Quote: Übertritte öff. Sekundarschule / öff. Gymnasium ab 3. Sek (in %) Thalwil - 2.4 L.a.A - 1.9
Quote: Übertritte öff. Primarschule / öff. Gymnasium (in %) Thalwil - 15.9 L.a.A - 19.5
----------------
Total: Thalwil - 30.9 Langnau - 32.2

If I interpret these number correctly it means that 2% more kids go to Langgymnasium (after 6th grade) in Thalwil than in Langnau but about 1.3% more kids in Langnau end up in Gymnasium in general. As for me the difference is not so big to consider schooling the most important factor in choosing between these two towns.

It's very noticeable. My youngest started a second year of KiGa and new kids entered KiGa for their first year. During the parents meting almost all parents of the younger group were speaking English to each other (with different accents). I don't remember seeing so many foreign kids in one group before.

That's not true if you want to buy a house. There are currently 9 houses for sale in L.a.A. and only 1 in Thalwil. They are building the whole area of houses for sale in Langnau. I don't think they are building or going to build any houses for sale in Thalwil, only apartments.

UPDATE: Sorry, I misunderstood you. You meant that the property costs more in Thalwil. That's true of course.
