Basel Land - Secondary School Grading

Good Evening!

We are at the juncture where the secondary school allocation of the famous (P,E,A) Allocation happens. We have been through many of the informative threads on the forum and trying to understand the merits and shortfalls of the Swiss Education System. Our question was a bit specific.

Is there a fixed % of Students who are allocated to the P Zug? E.g. the class size is 20, does it mean only 4 or 5 will be allocated to the P Zug? Apart from Grades and Social behavior - Are there any other factors taken into account?

We were told that if we are not happy with the grades, there is a possibility of appearing for a test called Ubertrittsprufung. Does anybody have experience of this?

Cheers!

Re: Basel Land - Secondary School Grading

My kids left school in BL a few years ago, and things have changed a bit since then.

When we went through it, there was no percentage enforced. The level was decided by exam results and for those on the boundaries, primary teacher's assessment. My youngest was allocated to A, but it was rapidly recognised that her primary teacher's assessment was ****** stupid, and she was move to E. Her grades at E were good enough for her to go to Gym. However, Oberwil Gym at that time had a few teachers who did not do what they were supposed to (start the subject from scratch and rapidly go through all the stuff to P level), but rather continued from P level, giving E level students a massive disadvantage. And then the administration wondered why none made it through to year 2.

Anyway, the point is that the grading at the start of secondary is not the end. Your child can move to P during secondary (it may involved going back a year), or even from E directly to Gym. Do not get hung up on your child getting to Gym. There are many routes through the system, and in general i works quite well and is flexible. The apprenticeship system is excellent, and it is not prescriptive. After an apprenticeship you can change career relatively easy with more education.

After 2 years at gym, my daughter got an apprenticeship at Roche, and is currently studying for a Bachelors in Pharmaceutical Engineering.
