Are kindergarten/school years combined?

Hi everyone.

I'm pretty clueless about the school system here but trying to educate myself!

Just wondering if the two kindergarten years are generally combined to one class and also are the early years in primary school combined? We are in Canton Solothurn if that makes a difference?

I have a 2.5 and 3.4 year old and the three year old has got it into her head that she'll be able to go to school with her brother so I need to manage expectations! (Obviously she won't be for the first year anyway before he starts)

Any insight into how he system works will be great!

Re: Are kindergarten/school years combined?

it depends and as with many things, but specially schooling, the canton even the commune can mater a lot. Canton Solothurn has two years of mandatory Kindergarten,

The two years of Kindergarten are normally together in the same room. But there are some times each week where only 1st or 2nd year is present.

Some communes have more than one Kindergarten class, in this case siblings might or might not be placed in the same one.

In my case my parents were asked if I should be placed in the same Kindergarten as my sister, but that would have meant that all of my playground friends would have been in another one. I was not asked, but I had chosen the same as my parents: to be with my playground friends.
