How long did you look for job in Switzerland (photography)

Hello everyone,

I have a question I would like to ask here: how long did it take for you to find a job when you moved here?
I mean not like any kind of job, but within your field?
I moved to Switzerland with my husband several month ago from Moscow. In Moscow I worked as a photographer over 3 years. I did personal shootings and fashion shootings. Here is some example for you to see my level:

For Moscow it worked well but here it seams I can not find any job cause I don't know where and how to promote myself. Also I don't know French well.
I would be very grateful for any advice!

Thank you very much!
Have a good day,
Aliona

Hello Aliona

First of all, very nice pictures! It is not very easy as a photographer in Switzerland.
My daughter is a photographer and she has no chance to live of it. She's got a few commissions, but it's not like in Moscow. We met a few photographers from Russia, and I know it's much easier over there. (We are both leaving Swizerland, for a better chance.)

My advice is:
- make a portfolio-homepage (what's easy to find at google)
- maybe a facebook-page too
- go to events and make photos
- hand your card or flyer around
- write in different forums
- make free pictures for friends who will promote the pictures.
- myspace was a quite good place to find 'models'. But myspace getting worse and a lot people are leaving.
- there are noticeboards in Migros and Coop. Hang some adverts. Oh and there should be noticeboards at some bus stations, too.

It's very sad but Swiss photographers are VERY jealous. It was so difficult to find a traineeship for my daughter.

Do you have a studio?

Every beginning is hard. Put the website on your adverst!

oh, and maybe there's a local magazin or newspaper. You could ask them if they would write a short article about you, and you'd make some pictures for free for them...

good luck anyway!

Dear Glasgow_girl,

Thank you very much for your letter. I already do most of the items from your list, but you gave me some new ideas.
And it is very good to hear some kind words about my photos.

Good luck to you and your daughter!
All the best,
Aliona
