English reader

Hello

I have a strange question I am writing a thesis for master, and need some body to read it and correct the mistakes, since my native language is not english. I found some one, but he asked for 300 fr for reading 50 pages, do you think it is expensive?? what is the average cost?

Re: English reader

Sounds quite cheap, especially if he is any good.

What's the thesis about, maybe somebody from here would do it free of charge if the subject was of interest to them.

300CHF is too cheap for this in my view.

50 pages is quite a lot to correct & proof if the content is heavy-going. Make sure you have the right person who can do this & in my view, it is 2 days work for this so price should be about 800CHF for a decent finished version.

Re: English reader

That is indeed cheap. Correcting 50 pages of English written by a non native speaker can be quite time consuming depending on the level of English.

It's not just spelling and grammar proofreaders need to check, a lot of the time things need to be rephrased, sometimes entire paragraphs need to be rewritten to make them sound English - I know I do this fairly often for my GF.

In fact the price of 300CHF leaves me wondering as to the quality of work you'll be getting.

Re: English reader

What is the subject of the thesis? - I have a scientific background, & might be able to help, if it was along these lines!

Correcting 50 pages written by a native English speaker can be equally challenging .
It's not just paragraphs, often entire chapters need rearranging/rewritten. Depending on their experience, Professional Writers/Editors will charge anything upwards of 80.- per hour. Therefore 300.- for in-depth editing of 50 pages is incredibly cheap and I, too, would be suspicious of the quality.

Re: English reader

I did one of these for someone last year, and it took 2-3 rounds because it's not as simple as just correcting spelling and grammar - the whole meaning has to be understood in order to bring it to the academic standard and still make sense...

Based simply on your posting, I'd say your english writing level is even lower than hers (her native language was Spanish, which has a similar contstruction to English so the corrections were mostly to do with meaning and writing arguments and structuring the points properly, and use of technical jargon)...

As others have said, it is very worthwhile getting someone who knows your specific subject area...

How many hours did the person say they would spend on it for the price ? How many review cycles (I agreed to maximum 2 - so I read the thesis, sent it back for comment, she responded to the comments, I read the updated version, repeat. Otherwise, it would have been a 'forever' thing - it could go back and forth over and over.

A proofreader can't just write it for you - they can help you with your structure and point out where it isn't reading clearly or making sense, but you have to do the work...and they are going to help you improve it, regardless of how much time they spend on it...

The only thing that the person I did the work for didn't do was tell me if they got good feedback - that was really annoying. It would have really helped me if she'd told me how it went and what feedback she got from her professor. She was specifically recommended a proofreader, so it was a fairly encouraging process, not about clutching at a few extra marks to pass the course...

Re: English reader

Forgot to add, I used to charge $5 a page, 10 years ago, for correcting english papers from native english speakers... 15 minutes per page, $20 an hour was very reasonable....

50 pages is a very long document...what is the word count ?

Re: English reader

Typically, editing is priced by word-count (as opposed to translation, which is almost always priced by page-count). So, the fair price would depend on whether or not your 50 pages has figures, tables, etc. Further, it would depend on the level of English with which you have written.

A fair price for an intermediate level English, corrected to an intermediate-advanced level is 3chuffs/100words. With an average of 500 words per page, 50 pages would then cost you a pretty 750chuffs. Even if your thesis has a lot of figures and tables, I'd say you are getting a very good deal.

Re: English reader

Just because someone would take 300 francs to copy edit a work doesn't mean they won't do quality work. Just after college--where I studied journalism and English--any amount of money in my pocket was better than none...and my work is pretty accurate.

I would really vett the person before spending the dough. Trust in copy editing goes a long way.
