Finding a Job in Geneva - [Advice and Links Please]

Hi all,

I work as a software developer primarily in banking and I'm hoping somebody will be able to give me some thoughts on how difficult I'm going to find getting a job in Geneva. I had been looking 3 months prior to getting here without much luck, but put that down to the pre Christmas period being quiet as usual. The market is very good at the moment in London so I'm hoping it will pick up here. I have just moved here with my girlfriend (her work moved here) and we thinking now about how long I should stay here looking for a job before considering returning to London. I'm aware that the process here can take a lot longer than in London, with employers often taking weeks/months to respond to a CV.

I have just over 2 years experience as a C++/Java Developer in banking, and have a B Permit on it's way from the Swiss authorities. I speak a little French (enough to get by as a tourist) but have been learning in my own time and am starting French lessons here soon.

Anybody got any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ben

Re: Finding a Job in Geneva

Hello there, this is actually my first post in this forum (I thought I might start answering something before asking!).

I'm currently living in Lausanne, and I have been searching for a job in the Leman Region since late december. I also work in IT, Java development, UNIX admin, SQL and so on. There are a LOT of job offers for your kind of work in Geneva, but i have found that most of them ask that you have a HES (Haute école Specialisée) Degree (which I don't!) and that you have fluent french.

If you do, I think your Banking experience will prove GREATLY beneficial, as most jobs are from Banks. Then there are some rare jobs that require only english but the are scarce at best.

Anyway, good luck and keep at it!

Alex

I actually find it funny (or sad - your choice) that so many people think their life will be sorted out as soon as they get to Switzerland. Its a nice country i agree but it has its bad points like every other country.

That, and that is difficult to find brown sugar.

www.jobup.ch would be a good place to start looking. There is also a handful of "headhunters" that cater to the IT market - PM me and I'll provide a few names.
