to my knowledge, that's something you have to do only when you're on welfare.

Unemployment insurance is an insurance, they're not social benefits.

In Switzerland firing people is easy and this makes our country competitive, the social disadvantages of this are offset by making the insurance mandatory. This way you get fired easily but you can also maintain your lifestyle (80% of it actually) while you look for another job at your level. There is no shame in using your insurance if you're not abusing it.

In other European countries, they don't have this, but to compensate they make it very difficult to lay off people and as a result they end up with lots of temporary employment contracts, entrenched unions, unmobile workforce, etc. and the people aren't happy either.
You clearly have little knowledge of the subject.

Wann ist eine arbeit zumutbar?
Sie müssen grundsätzlich jede Arbeit unverzüglich annehmen. Unzu- mutbar und somit von der Annahmepflicht ausgenommen ist eine Arbeit, die
den üblichen Arbeitsbedingungen nicht entspricht;
nicht angemessen auf Ihre Fähigkeiten oder auf Ihre bisherige Tätig- keit Rücksicht nimmt (gilt nicht für unter 30-Jährige);
nicht Ihren persönlichen Verhältnissen entspricht (Alter, Gesundheit, Familie) ;
einen Arbeitsweg von täglich mehr als 4 Stunden notwendig macht ;
den Wiedereinstieg in Ihren Beruf erschwert, falls darauf in absehba- rer Zeit eine Aussicht besteht;
Ihnen einen Lohn einbringt, der geringer ist als 70 % des versicherten Verdienstes, es sei denn, Sie erhalten Kompensationszahlungen im Rahmen eines Zwischenverdienstes (vgl. Frage 9).

Re: Unemployment benefits - After the PhD

Dear Vlad,

Could you find an answer about your question for 18 months? I really wonder it, and could not find any other thread except yours. Can a Ph.D. student who contributes to the unemployment extend his permit for 18 months (or 400 days) after his PhD contract is halted?

Re: Unemployment benefits - After the PhD

Dear Vlad,

I know it is a bit late but I am in the same situation as you.

My permit is ending with my Ph.D. this year. I've contributed the unemployment during the last 4 years. The question is, can I extend my B permit for 400 (or 18 months) days via unemployment? Or just like master or bachelor graduates, I apply 6 months L permit to hunt a new job? Technically I have a right to get unemployment salary but rules are a bit ambiguity
