Job Application Timescale Query

I recently applied for a lecturing position at a university in the Zürich area and was wondering if anyone could give some indication of how long one would typically have to wait to hear about a potential interview/rejection. I received confirmation that my application had arrived about a week after the deadline.

Thanks for your help.

Hello and welcome to the Forum. HR is a mysterious world all of it's own. Perhaps call and say "Hiyaaaaaa! I'm still very enthusiastic..."

Re: Job Application Timescale Query

Except in this case HR would be a group of Profs., not full-time personnel people...

Re: Job Application Timescale Query

Hi there,

From my personal experience in academic selection procedures, I´d say that it can take anything from a week up to a couple of months before you hear something back. It all depends on how fast the selecting committee evaluates the applications, prepares a shortlist and defines a calendar for the interviews.
Usually, the higher the position, the longer it takes, given that more people are involved and it is at times hard to find free time slots that suit all the members of the evaluating panel.

I am myself waiting to hear back for an academic position in Bern, advertised well before Christmas and with an application deadline early February.

Good luck with your application!

Re: Job Application Timescale Query

Thanks. I guessed at least six weeks for a permanent position.

Re: Job Application Timescale Query

Just browsing the forum for this exact answer, so thank you.

I applied for a postdoc at Basel Biozentrum over two weeks ago and despite having an acknowledgement saying 'looking at your application with particular interest' and 'will get back to you as soon as a decision has been made' I still haven't heard anything.

Desperate to work (hausfrau life is driving me totally and utterly round the bend) and having had experience several times of being 'courted' for the position and then never hearing back again, or simply never hearing anything at all, I was starting to think I should give up and wait another 6 months for an appropriate position. But I'm feeling much heartened by this. Academics have their own way of doing things, after all.

I do wish the same etiquette applied here as in the UK though, ie if you've taken the time to apply for a job you deserve at least to be informed you aren't being considered.
