Electronic copies of diplomas/certificates for job applications?

It's not the custom in Canada to send copies of all your certificates and diplomas, etc. as it seems to be in Switzerland. I'm just wondering how this works, especially by email.

Do universities give you e-copies of degrees? Do you just scan in paper copies? Do you send it as a JPG?

Unfortunately the certificate for my BA is enormous--not letter size. Even mailing a photocopy seems ridiculous to me. Is there some other equivalent document that I'm supposed to send? I can't even scan the thing. I'd have to take it out of the frame and take a picture.

Thanks

Re: Electronic copies of diplomas/certificates for job applications?

PDFs of certificates seem to be the norm here in my (limited but recent) experience. I don't remember actually being asked for proof of my university degree though - the work certificate (a uniquely Swiss institution?) seems to be the one that employers focus on. This is basically a document that describes your roles and responsibilities in your previous job, and also includes feedback from your manager and previous managers concerning your performance. This would not be required if you're applying for a job from abroad though.

Unframing your degree certificate sounds a bit extreme to me... maybe you could ask your university to send you an email certifying that you obtained such-and-such a degree on such-and-such a date ?

I scanned my diplomas and certificates to PDF format and sent them.

That seems to be the norm. No one has ever questioned them whatsoever.

I just scanned my results, which is appended to my resume, with all documents included in one file. If they want diplomas can bring them to the interview.

Oh dear, that's another thing. Will they want the original degree at an interview? I wouldn't want to fold it and I think I would look ridiculous walking in with a big art-sized portfolio folder under my arm.

Perhaps I should go with the other suggestion and get my university to send me something else that confirms my degree. Anyone done this before? What exactly should I ask for?
