Old rare books digitization projects

Hi all,
I had heard about some liberaries contracting out the work of digitizing those old books into eBooks.. I would be very interesting into taking up such work.

To the forum I would appreciate any details on on this topic. Thanks in advance. All I know is I need to use some softwares to digitize and validate the workdone... Appreciate some guidance around this business please.

Regards
MDCP

As far as I can tell, it's Google and the like who are doing most of that work. I doubt the libraries themselves have the resources to handle something like this on their own; besides, with Google offering to do it for them, I do not quite see the economic incentive for anyone else to pay for it...

Re: Old rare books digitization projects

There is a firm just outside of Lausanne, called fordigitalbooks, google them.

They have been a pioneer in creating a machine to scan bound books. They have done a lot for businesses, libraries, organsiations, etc. in either selling the machine, or contracting the work themselves. Of course, really old/frail books may be slightly different, but they have digitised a lof of historical collections.

As a swiss, if not world leader, in this technology, they would be hard to beat/compete with in my experience.

I would disagree. There are many private collections, ie. newspapers, archives, libraries, organsations that do this. Google may appear to the mass media, but hundreds of smaller, lesser known collections go privately.

Re: Old rare books digitization projects

Apologies, should have used the number and not the letters.

It is http://www.4digitalbooks.com , located in Ecublens.

Anyhow, it is not a bookstore, but rather a company selling the digitsation equipment or doing the work on contract.
