Very demotivating and depressing. Looking for junior finance jobs in Geneva.PLS help!

Hi there,

I've recently relocated to Geneva (3months ago) from London with my partner who's been transfered by his company.

I'm looking for jobs in junior finance/ accounting roles and it is extremely frustrating and demotivating so far. It is so much slower and less active in the market here and approach to recruitment is so different! I've never had a problem looking for a job in london (normally would take me 3 weeks maximum to find a job) since i've graduated from a great university and have alot of professional experience and skills as a grad. Here in geneva, I feel that all the roles i have applied for seem to match my experience, qualification etc and still rejections from 1st CV screening process.
For example, I've applied for many roles as Finance/Accounts Assistant in a medium sized firm, even though i have more than enough experience and skills and language, still rejections.

I've graduated 2 years ago from a 3rd best UK university a BSc in business management, i've got 2 years worth of experience in a similar role to what i'm applying even with internship with RBS when i was 16, where i was working before and during university on a summer contract basis as finance/accounts assistant roles from small to large companies. I speak and write fluent english.

The roles i've applied requires 1) fluent english and dont expect any other languages 2) recent graduate with interest in pursuing career in finance 3) good analytical and numerical skills etc and many other usual requirements. and still no luck. i've tried recruitment agencies, daily monitoring from online job website, anything else?!

Though, after university in 2009 i took a gap year and i went away and opened a reasonably small business venture project where i employed 5 staffs and worked for myself for 1 year but i'm no longer doing it.

So i'm here all over again, i feel like i'm completely moving backward going from not having a problem finding a job in london, from employed by myself, to moving backward and applying for jobs where i did even before university (overqualified) and still getting rejected. I might be slightly over qualified but still can't applied for jobs higher qualified. I don't know what to do!!
I went from busy and always something to do during my days to doing nothing in geneva, extremely bored, no jobs and no friends and only thing exiting is wait for my partner to come home and occasional events.

PLEASE help, it's driving me mad!

Hi,

I can't give you much advice on the job front... although I know there are people on here who have been looking for much longer.

But why don't you try and find some other (useful) activities to fill your time while you're looking?

For example, why not take a French course? I know there are jobs which only require English, but I'm sure that having a certificate in the local language would open up more jobs... and it would help you with your integration.

(I have looked at your profile and it does say you speak French, but I noticed in your post you mentioned jobs with 'fluent English and don't expect any other languages'... so I'm assuming your French is not fluent - my apologies if I'm wrong.)

Or what about seeing if you can find something on a voluntary basis? If you do a Google search for 'benevolat Genève' plenty of sites come up...

Just thinking that this would mean you weren't so bored while you're looking for work.

I don't know what your financial situation is but there are organisations which provide French lessons for a very reasonable price if money is an issue... but they don't provide certificates which a good language school will.

Also, and I know this sounds like a stupid question, are you sure you're including all the required information in your applications? I'm not an expert (I'm unemployed and on a medical certificate...), but it's my understanding that you need to get all the documents exactly right or your application won't get past the first stage. For example, a Swiss CV looks very different to a UK CV, and is a lot shorter. And the potential employer will expect work certificates from former employers to be included (as opposed to a list of references which they have to contact).

Hope that helps.

From your post it seems that you refuse to learn the local language. Very very bad. Even admitting that you dont speak french but would like to learn will make a huge difference. Then repeat until you get it. "This is not the UK"

Better?

Good luck

You may have noticed that Geneva is a little bit smaller than London. Hang in there. It will take longer but you'll find something.

reading all this scares the heck out of me im thinking of moving to switzerland from ireland (native of slovakia EU-8), and even though im not so hard on myself, giving myself till the next summer to find a job, reading tons of these negative posts doesnt make the light at the end of my tunnel brighter luckily i studied more languages before and slovakian is grammar-wise closer to german than english...so...that alone keeps my hopes up......patience my dear friends....the more you have to fight for it, the sweeter the "victory" will taste

Unless you are working in a big international company, having local language skills will give you a better chance, so I'd focus on learning them quick! If you are up against other applicants with same skills but with local languages, you have little chance. English is not an official language of Switzerland! So, learn, learn, learn!

Even when you work for a multinational, many are hesitant to hire someone without local language... because there are naturally many locals in the company, and communication is a lot better.

Yup... learn some French fast... but you sound smart enough to do that, no? and I am sure that in your great university you have perhaps already learnt some?

If the job just requires English, don't worry about learning the local language, many people speak only English here and work and live here with no issues.

First of all welcome to the forum, Im also new in EF but have couple of years in ZH.
2nd. Here they are ver precise to acomodate people acording his level, example; normally we think if we apply for a job below our level we will get it faster, but here they also reject you for being over qualified, So you may try to aim exactly the level you have in experience and knowledge.
3rd. I live in zurich and only can tell you about here, My hubby's best friend work for Angst+Pfister and as I understand they changed their language to only english, even the swiss ones need to speak in english inside the offices, so you can make a research about this kind of company where you live, because he is swiss and the other night he was telling us how some multinational companys are doing this.
So.. chin up, have a good rest, tomorrow is a new day and every new day brings new oportunities.

Have you ever asked why they didn't take your CV into consideration for all the roles you applied for?

Of course, companies may not answer your question or tell you the exact reason, but you have the chance to get at least one answer that might give you a clue.

I was going to say the same thing. As well as saying that from her profile she does speak French, as well as Spanish and Vietnamese.
