Re: Is CHF 70,000 a good salary to get by in Basel?

Being single you can get by quite nicely on 70k , you won't have a posh Morningside type pad on that salary but you won't be starving either.

Well lacoste would be designer right? How much for a shirt from there? 200CHF max?

If he's earning 4500CHF per month

Rent - 1300CHF
Health insurance - 200CHF
Food - 600CHF
Casa vivo from swisscom for internet TV and phone - 130 per month
Mobile phone - 100CHF per month

Gives expenses of 2330 per month and gives about 2k spare to spend at hugo boss and brothels.

Oh to be single again

Surely a wind up??

70-80chf per kilo for good steak over here.

70k is 5,800chf per month. Deductions of 11% and tax of 10% - leaves 4,600chf - 200chf for health insurance and 100chf for travel per month - and another 100 for TV and Billag.

4,200chf - allow minimum 1200chf for rent - 3000chf. 100chf per day with no saving.

Beer in a pub - 9chf per pint
Pizza in a restaurant - 20chf
This should go directly to a sticky, if it doesnt already exist.

Re: Is CHF 70,000 a good salary to get by in Basel?

I've looked for changing flat in center/SBB/Zoo/Aeschplatz/Gundeli area, and the renting price has gone up in five years I've been here. (Meaning I don't move).
What I found, roughly and for renovated flats only, older condition may be cheaper:
1.000 CHF: 20-30 m2 one room and kitchen/bath
1.400 CHF: 40-50 m2 two rooms and k/b
1.700 CHF: 60-70 m2 three rooms and k/b
Paying more than 2.000 CHF in Basel is a choice, not a situation one is forced into, there is enough for less on the market. One can not say the same for many other places in the country.
Put a little on for a balcony, and keep in mind those are prices far off the Rhine, just 5 mn walking distance from SBB train station.

I am sure you can find something cheaper with luck, especially if the flat is not renovated, but there are not that many renting flats on offer comparing to five years ago. It's not an overheated market, far from it and even further from Zürich or Geneva prices, but still.

The rest of costs is a question of life style, you are the only one able to find out that one.

P.S. It is not a bad idea to keep an eye on different cities in different identifiable threads, as the market is quite different depending on which part of the country people are moving to. For housing, that is.

Did you read the type of life style he is looking for? That's not going to be enough in Basel to have the same lifestyle he has in Eds (apparently that's slang for Edinburgh. Took me a while to figure that out).

Car, designer cloths, gym, "nice" flat, eating out or getting take out all the time, nights out drinking, eating steak..... 70K in Basel is not enough for all that.

Well, I guess it depends on how much designer shopping and how much steak....

Like I said as long as he doens't have a mortgage or loans to pay off back in Scotland he should be fine. Some of you really don't get how much money 70k is for a single male with no obligations!

It is when you are single that someone should try to invest and put as much as possible on the side. Not when you start a family...

You'd spend more than 2600 per month on clothes, food and bars? I hardly imagine him going to bars every night.

Might buy 4 shirts per month so 800CHF. Food eating out every night 1000CHF and bars 800CHF

The shirts aren't going to disappear

Porsch Honey,

Minimia made a joke about some of those guys who buy designer clothes but don't know how to put them up together in a tasty way, eat only crappy food and don't know how to impress a girl in a bar. It was a joke.

Some of you really don't get....

Some of you don't know how...

That is the way I understood her.

What designer are we talking about here? I know for a fact Hugo Boss or Ted Baker (what I consider designer) don't cost 800CHF each. I'm intrigued which designer shirts cost 800CHF each.

I'm also intrigued if someone from Scotland wants to wear 800CHF shirts regularly.

Haha i am prepared to cut back and shop in the tescos equivalent and probably just buy all my clothes in eds when back home.

I wouldnt plan on bring a car as the transport system is very good over there. But one thing that i dont want to give up is general good healthy food items. I luv my red meats esp the steaks are the meats decent enough prices at the butchers?

calculating on a CHF70,000 slaray i would have roughly 4,300 a month. Plan would be max 1000 for rent and the rest to get by for the month. Thats leaves 825 per week. Thats plenty right? Thou have feeling a night out probs cost me 2/300 CHF

Well, let's put it this way - it will be cheaper for you to fly back every weekend to Edinburgh and spend your weekends there

Re: Is CHF 70,000 a good salary to get by in Basel?

OMG, I'm surprised you've named yourself "porsch" without the "e" if you've never seen an CHF800 shirt. Hugo Boss is not designer I'm afraid. It's totally mass market. You're clearly not shopping in the right places.

Anywho, the point is WE can't decide if 70K is enough for Brucie... Only HE can decide that based on his lifestyle, wants, needs, how many times does he go out a week, how many times per week does he want to eat out, how much does he drink, what is "designer" clothes, what is "nice" flat, willingness to compromise, etc, etc.
