OMG, I'm surprised you've named yourself "porsch" without the "e" if you've never seen an CHF800 shirt. Hugo Boss is not designer I'm afraid. It's totally mass market. You're clearly not shopping in the right places.

Anywho, the point is WE can't decide if 70K is enough for Brucie... Only HE can decide that based on his lifestyle, wants, needs, how many times does he go out a week, how many times per week does he want to eat out, how much does he drink, what is "designer" clothes, what is "nice" flat, willingness to compromise, etc, etc.
My screename is named after the german politician Peter Porsch. Was he very rich?

So where do I get these 800CHF shirts from oh wise one?

Well, it's clear you don't know about designer & luxury goods then. No wonder you can live on 70K.

Dude, seriously, are you doubting they exist? Try Bon Genie. To start. You'll find a few there.

You won't be saving any money but neither will you be starving.
For one person, the effort and time involved in going to Germany to buy some shopping isn't worth the cash saving IMO, much better to spend the weekends getting out and about.
No you don't need a car, but it's essential if you want some freedom to roam the country and see Switzerland/France/Germany.
Bear in mind he is living in Basel so the 'effort' will be taking the number 8 tram and then walking ten minutes. Worth doing at least once a month, imo. Saving when VAT rebate included is between 30%-50%. So basically a 1 hour shop could save you 100CHF. Not a bad return for an hours labour - even in Switzerland

Right. But that's YOU. You don't know how the OP wants to live, or what his expectations are. That's my point (which has already been said several times).

It's really more your attitude than whether or not it's difficult to answer. I'm sure you can do a search on google to find nice designer shirts.

Since the threadstarter has already said he doesn't even want 200CHF shirts because they are too expensive don't you think you are arguing needlessly? And yes I do know how he wants to live. Becuase, surprise surprise, he has written in this thread how he wants to live. Would you like me to make a recording of it and send it to you so you don't have to read it?

Ok. I think 70,000 is enough per month. Let the others just complain.... most of them need to work some six months to earn the same.

(I have survived here some years ago as an intern with half your offer)

Provided you get 13 payments per year, of course.

I was talking base salary here. Bonus is extra (obviously) and surely more than only one month salary...

Oh, you fell for your boss's "the 13th salary is your bonus" nonsense, did you?

No, in my world my annual base salary is divided by 13 and paid monthly, with a double payment in December. Then there's the bonus. I have to run off and start a new thread, "Is a bonus of 57 kazillion chuffs enough to buy 4 sirloin steaks and a case of beer in Germany?"

Come to Zurich and have a walk down Bahnhofstrasse. I'm sure that Gergio Armani, Prada or Hermes would be delighted to take your CHF 800 for a shirt. Fancy a CHF 10,000 suit to go with it?

Re: Is CHF 70,000 a good salary to get by in Basel?

My experience from living a year in Basel:

The adjustment I got from a UK salary was about base salary x1.65 to convert to CHF, and then this figure x1.45 again for increased cost of living.
At first glance this looks good, but what I found though was that my buying power and freedom on the CHF package was greatly reduced compared to what I could do in the UK.
I too love good food and red meat, but the new situation in CH meant that the butcher with the nice cuts and tender meat was no longer an option except for special occasions, and that I would rather have to settle for special offers at Denner.

And as for apartment cost, the post by Faltrad looks like a very good and accurate description of the situation in Basel.

Not sure what you are on atm, but don’t get blinded by the larger numbers. They are there for a reason.
Using the salary conversion method applied by my old company back in 2009, and working this backwards from CHF to GBP, this would mean that CHF 70’ equals just under GBP 30’ (using the same 2009 figures).
You can survive on it just fine, but it will not be very enjoyable if you are used to a bit of economic freedom (as indicated in your post).

For 800 you don't only get a shirt, but for almost half the price a whole tailor made suit is yours - but only today

Re: Is CHF 70,000 a good salary to get by in Basel?

Honestly i sometimes wonder if people on these threads are bluffing or are really that spoiled! Of course living in Switzerland is more expensive than the UK or the US or almost anywhere else for that matter, but the country is such a beautiful place and there are so many benefits. You don't need a car there is public transport almost everywhere. 70,000 is plenty to live off if you do it right. Share a flat. Don't get wasted every night (can still a few nights a week though ). Enjoy easyjet prices and travel some weekends. Do your designer cloths shopping outside of switzerland etc. Its less about the money and more about the experience if you want it.

Good luck whatever you decide to do!

Re: Is CHF 70,000 a good salary to get by in Basel?

Hi,

Without knowing what job you are looking at, hours worked etc and your industry sector...

Mrs Nickatbasel was on a similar rate working as a clerical assistant at one of the large pharma companies.

According to this link: http://www.lohncomputer.ch/de/startseite.html

Your net after deductions will be around 4300.

After that, you need to pay Krankenkasse (medical insurance) - have a look at http://www.comparis.ch - my calculation is 250 - 300 minimum depending on the excess (or franchise).

That will leave you with about 4000 for living costs.

http://www.homegate.ch will give you an idea of cost of apartments - I have no idea what kind of place you have in Edinburgh - but for SFr1000 you're looking at around 55sq metres and 2 rooms (i.e. a lounge and a bedroom, maybe separate kitchen and a bathroom) in central Basel. Probably enough for a single guy but I have no idea what you are used to.

So that leaves you with about SFr3000 for other stuff - don't forget to factor in household bills like insurance, energy costs, water (unless these are included).

If you decide to own a car, it gets expensive as you will need to consider running costs - including a parking space in Basel which will set you back ca. 150-200 per month. I'm not a car owner so can't help with the other costs. However as JustRose states, you may be able to do without a car depending on your circumstances.

So no, you will not live a luxury lifestyle but you can probably get by - and you will need to consider shopping at discount stores like Denner, Aldi to make your money go further.

I am sure somebody will come along and say a family of 5 can live adequately on this kind of money - and I am sure they do.

Also, my memory of Edinburgh from living there 11 years ago was there were many very good and inexpensive restaurants. Not so Basel.

Cheers,
Nick

Vaud is hardly the same as Basel Stadt - one of the most expensive in the country for health insurance and tax.

If he lived in Vaud on that money no doubt he could rent a 5 bedroomed house with a pool and hot and cold running maids.

Cheers,
Nick

Hello OP,
I would say get a rough idea of all the costs but from my POV just look at the long term gains from a career and personal perspective.
As a local Mrs Horse reckons 70k is enough for a reasonable standard of living but this maybe a little below what you are used to.
My 2 rappens worth: book that flight and give it a go!
Regards,
The horse

He said he likes nice restaurants. Of course, as with what is "designer", we can also argue what is "nice" as far as restaurants go. I have not found a restaurant yet in Switzerland that I would describe as a nice one where you can have dinner for 30 fr. There are many nice (in my opinion) restaurants around Basel in France, which are of course cheaper, but still not in that price range.

I vote for the "no, you can't keep your throwing cash around, having nice flat, car, gym, designer clothes, nice restaurants etc etc in Basel on 70K" crowd. But it will be a great experience and you won't starve, so go for it anyway.
