Employers that hire women with headscarves

Hi everyone

I know a Muslim woman who wears a headscarf who is looking for a job to make ends meet (something like working at a store, maybe even a factory).

Some employers have a policy that doesn't allow for this (Coop, for example). Does anyone know of any big employers that DO hire women with headscarves?

Thanks a lot.

Does she have any teaching experience? A friend's wife is a teacher or teaching assistant at a local school.

Sorry I cant help, I have never seen a woman working with headscarf (zurich area). Even my neighbor who is turkish uses hers normaly but when she is at work (works cleaning in a migro nearby) she doesnt have it on. She doesnt speak english and I dont speak german so I cant ask her.
Sorry for my ignorance but, how big of a deal is not wearing it for work? Im sure she could understand she is living in a diferent country and she might need to adapt a little, thats easier than making the country adapt for minories (and i am a minorie so no racist talking... or writing)
Hope she can find a job in the way she wants or make a little adjustment to get it. Best of luck for her.

OP, there is this Muslim organization in Geneva with a club for women. Attend and ask there, I am sure they will know about the employment conditions in a neighboring canton, I do not know how far you are from GE.

I guess its a big deal if either party chooses to make it so - for whatever reason - religious freedom, freedom of expression for wearing a headscarf. Secularity, respect for women, progressive culture etc etc. for opposing it.

It is a big deal.

If you really want to know more about it, let's open a thread about it so we don't go OT on this one.

Coco, honestly, yes it is ignorance from you, which is not a big deal but it is in your hand to keep that ignorance or educate yourself on this topic.

Re: Employers that hire women with headscarves

At my local bakery when I was working around Hottingen, Zurich, the lady who worked in there wore a headscarf. She didn't often serve customers - more baking I think...

I got the impression that she may have been the daughter or daughter-in-law of the women that ran the store...

Re: Employers that hire women with headscarves

My local Migros and Post (Zurich) has someone with a head scarf. If a company is really very negative, she might ask to have a more background job. I personally do not care, but some employers think that wearing a head scarf is a bit too offensive when being in direct customer contact. That does not imply for background jobs though. One can only ask about it.

I lived in Malaysia for a while, so I can't really relate to this anti head scarf movement. And of course having a cross in school rooms is completely ok.

Re: Employers that hire women with headscarves

Sorry I cannot help but I have to say that I have not seen anyone with a headscarf in Basel, at work or working that is. I think Turkish women, especially the younger generation though do not wear the headscarf, but I guess Nil can correct me here.
Best wishes to your friend!

Re: Employers that hire women with headscarves

Don't know whether there are any rules around ladies wearing head scarves but there's a guy working at Denner near our place who wears a turban.

If he's allowed to wear that I would imagine the rule is good for both genders, no?

Re: Employers that hire women with headscarves

What about something in the food preparation area, where headwear is mandatory.

Does the scarf itself have any symbolism, or would she be OK to change into something disposable (or put a paper hat over her scarf) when she is at work?

Funnily enough, I think headscarves can be quite attractive, they have the result of really accentuating the woman's face, IMHO.

You are going OT already. It is only a big deal for a fairly small fraction of Muslim females in Europe - you must be fairly religious to have an issue to take off the scarf at work. I know plenty of Turkish females who have absolutely no issue at all to be Muslim but not wear a scarf. BTW not only "because the west forces them to adapt" but just as much in Turkey as they do not live in the part where the society forces them to wear one... there is no rule in the Koran asking for a headscarf, it takes quite strong interpretations to come from "decent clothes" all the way to a scarf. (according to the bible on the other hand do women HAVE to cover their heads when praying)

Calling everyone ignorant who does not care about the more fundamental religious people of an already small minority religion around them doesn't help either.

I have seen women with headscarfs working in Zurich, but only at ethnic businesses or as cleaners. As I go to the gym typically relatively late, I often see the cleaners there and I believe they wear "ISS" jackets, so that's probably a company that hires fundamental Muslims.

Is it that they don't HIRE people that wear them, or that they don't ALLOW you to wear it while working??

Re: Employers that hire women with headscarves

I would advise her to apply to lots of companies anyway. If they've got a problem with her wearing a headscarf, they'll be sure to mention it at the interview.

Coop doesn't allow them for sales staff ('Verkäuferinnen') who have a specific dress code to follow - no headcoverings of any sort. They are still allowed in the warehouse etc. so I guess it's not strictly true that they "don't hire women with headscarves."

Migros allows them everywhere "except where it is hygienically unsound".

Meanwhile Ikea actually provides them as an optional part of the uniform! (Or did a couple of years ago - I assume they still do.)

Doesn't make it right though.

I can understand the requirement that the face is not covered in some situations, but what's the essential difference between a headscarf and hair? If anything, wearing a headscarf is more hygenic than having hair, dandruff and scabies flying everywhere.

I wouldn't even say that a headscarf is excusively religious, so how do you ban it for secular reasons?
