| | Employment in Basel..!!!!
Hi Guy's
Please help and sorry if this has been asked before, I am new to this site..!!!..I have had a telephone interview with a company in Basle, and today received a tele call from them stating they will be flying me out for an interview, and the HR Department will be contacting me shortly.
Can anyone throw some light on this, what do they do about offers etc, is there a offer before you go so you have some idea, or whats the norm ???
Living in Basle, some of the website i have got off google, state a price per month, or a price (without costs), is this the bills included. If anyone has used any good sites, I would be grateful if you could share these.
Please help a guy that is worried about the move....Cheers & please to meet you all.
Tim

Moved your thread to Employment since it touches on employment issues. Naming of the company offering the job might invite more comments from members from here.
As for housing issues, search the Housing in General subforum for all the information you need as well as Daily Life where this thread was initially posted to.

Things may have changed since 2002, but this is my experience. I was also UK based. I had two telephone interviews (one from the agency, which was a first), and one from a guy at the company - who turned out to be one of my reports, when I started. I was then flown out for a face to face meeting. I was interviewed by HR, then by same guy who gave me the telephone interview along with his managers.
A few weeks later, I flew out again, with my wife, for an overnight stay. I had an interview that day with the guy who would be my boss - he'd just been made an offer of employment himself. Once he'd approved me, I sat down with the HR manager, and we talked money. Once we'd reached a satisfactory package, he said a formal offer would be sent out. That evening I had a very nice meal with my boss, his wife and my wife at the Teufelhof restaurant in Basel, paid for by the company. Neither of us, at this time, had actually accepted the job offer. The following day, my wife and I explored Basel a bit, then flew home.
Once I got home, I received the formal offer, Three months later, I began work.

Hi Tim,
Have a search around this forum for info about accommodation, cost of living etc as it comes up quite regularly. Also, questions about salary come up fairly frequently too.
Try to take some of the negative comments you may read with a pinch of salt - some people just write up here to let off steam.
If you ask questions on here, it helps if you state in your post what you have looked at or read already - so we don't regurgitate the same stuff.
Also, don't be put off by some of the less polite posters if you put questions up.
Cheers,
Nick

Will you be living AND working in Switzerland?
The rental prices usually state a basic for the apartment, plus the service and utilities charges, which is usually about CHF 250 per month. Included is your share of all the heating, hot water, building maintenance, gardening, fresh water, house lighting, lift service, Cable TV, communual rubbish. On top of this you will have your own electricity bill which is about CHF 80 per month. Plus the famous Billag TV license.
At the end of the accounting year you will get a statement declaring how much they owe you, or how much extra you have to pay.
Often a landlord will advertise a flat as 1'500 inclusive. Then you find out from the contract he is charging CHF 1'350 rent plus CHF 150 for the extra costs. But at the end of the year he presents a bill for CHF 1'200 extra, extra, costs as his estimate of CHF 150 was far too low.
