So, what you're saying is that you looked around you already, and see everyone on a higher than 120k salary, then come and ask whether it is possible to get a 120k salary...

All I know is that I need to start making more money (create a pyramid scheme if I have to) and more babies to get at the right spot on that chart.

Easy to get is different than possible. I am seeing that you are that kind of guy that we need to tell 4 times. First we tell, then we draw a picture, then we explain again and unfortunely only on 4th time he gets all wrong.
Damn, i am on bad luck today.

Sorry but no patience today.

Re: Is CHF120K a good salary in Switzerland?

As per the Op's tittle 120k is a good salary, almost double the Swiss average.
The job market is flat, HR Managers thinking is, I see +2% unemployment figures and think supply is outstripping demand so any job candidate must have the perfect resune and be prepared to take a lower salary.
But please look to yourself and your lifestyle do the numbers and you will have the answer or is it a pissing competion? and you need to impress some people?

When i say something i say it with a reason.

When i started looking for Zurich (1 year ago), 120k was the average value for 7 years of experience in IT in Zurich. I have that kind of income plus health insurance with 300 chf excess and other perks.

One friend of university that came in 2005, he says to me. Guy you have been tricked. 150k chf is the least for recent graduates (but he came in 2005).

Last week, i know a 24 year recent graduate in economy that is moving and he got plus 120k (13 instalments and not 12) plus 3 month paid temporary house and a huge annual bonus.

That is why i asked......

If we look to ads the values are lower than 100k. But when i talk to people here and they have 3000 apartments, eat beef a lot, going to ski every weekend the 120k seems the pretty low standard....

I should study banking
PHD in "science and technology" isn't enough if you are not smart. So, first be sure to be the latter, then start to complain.

Re: Is CHF120K a good salary in Switzerland?

Having lived in Switzerland for over 25 years, I've seen the standard of living change.

25 years ago, people had just begun travelling. The vacations people take today were luxury back then.

Most people only had one car, if any.

People spent their money buying things in their own town.

Education was made up of an apprenticeship. A few kids did a second apprenticeship or went on to university. Most didn't.

People rented and didn't buy their homes.

I have a sneaking feeling today's high standard of living is being met by fewer and fewer people.

Of course, the general standard of living in Switzerland is good and even if I can't afford fancy vacations, cars or furniture, the beauty of the area and the quality of life still make up for a lot.

Re: Is CHF120K a good salary in Switzerland?

In everyone's opinion what does a single American relocating to Zurich need to make in order to living comfortable?

I was over here on assignment and interested in coming back full time in an opportunity becomes available. I'm not here long enough to get a good feel. College grad, finance field (underwriting) 3.5 years of experience.

Thanks.

Re: Is CHF120K a good salary in Switzerland?

I'm currently living in Chicago comfortably: salary mid 70k (USD), own a condo downtown, dog, goes out to dinner about 2-3 times a week, goes out for cocktails about 2-3 times a week, takes a few vacations a year. Keeping similar lifestyle.

Does anybody have an update on the graph on the first page? It would most probably be very useful.

That's gonna cost - you like the things that are most expensive here.

own a condo downtown - 750K CHF
goes out to dinner about 2-3 times - 200CHF
goes out for cocktails about 2-3 times a week - 500CHF

Excluding the Condo (Consider renting !) , Your drinking/eating habits will cost CHF1000 per week. 52K per year. Rent will be another 24K per year for a modest place. Insurances another 10K per year. Taxes etc, I think you will need around...

120K per year !

Assuming you are single with no dependants , not wanting to save and do not drive over the speed limit.

Re: Is CHF120K a good salary in Switzerland?

Do people really spend that much on cocktails in a week? Gosh! How many drinks is that?

Cut out one week of cocktails and the savings are enough to buy a bike, to be able to go exploring all the wonderful Swiss countryside. Cut out a second week, and you have a pair of skis - ana countrywide ski pass for the x country ski trails. Regularly cut out one week of the drinks , and that money will cover travel costs and a hotel night every weekend. Regularly cut out a second week, and that gives 500 a month towards longer travel weeks (Italy.....) Cut out all the expensive drinks and you are saving 1000 more a month for any longterm desire........ and that is still leaving you with your 3 meals out a week.

An evening for 4 at Tao's easily runs to 500CHF. This is upmarket Cocktails, assuming that's what the Op meant. Drinks are around CHF20-30 each. (...and well worth it, they serve some of the best there.)

Yep for some of us, a half price bottle of wine from denner and homemade pizza is about as good as it gets on a friday night (not that I'm complaining mind you )

From what I've seen, you need to double your US salary to approach the same sort of comfort you might have in the US once you're in the 65k+ range since that's where you become accustomed to being able to buy what you like, when you like at less than shameless prices. In the end, you won't either be able to afford or be unwilling to afford most of what you consider essential to your lifestyle in the US so you'll either change or move back. I've lived in several of the top 10 'most expensive cities' in the world and even I have been utterly shocked and amazed by the prices of things here. Think long and hard before making the leap.
