when applying for jobs in future, should I mention I have had a hernia? could this make employers reluctant to hire me?
If it affects your ability to perform your duties as expected, then I would say it is disclosable...If not, then it is nobody's business.

well, now I do believe that I will fully recover so it shouldn't affect me in future. I just need to explain why I was laid off. I could just look for some other illness which does not recur I guess. Any suggestions?

Tell the truth, tell them you are better now, get a doctors certificate that you are now better. Attempting anything else will most like end up coming back to haunt you.

Good luck by the way in your search for a new job.

You should have a legal insurance
This advice is NOT to be ignored. In fact, legal protection insurance is one of the most important pieces of insurance you can have right along personal health insurance or liability. I've met too many who have no idea about its existence and only when they get in trouble do they regret not spending the 200 or so per year for it.

I've just discovered that a number of other people have been let go by this company just yesterday, including my department manager who had been there for 18 years.

sound like the company is in trouble then, did you get down to the RAV? if your company is about to go tits up then get down there asap and get all the paperwork sorted, otherwise your claim could be delayed

thanks, it is a very large company so it won't go broke. Apparently costs have risen too much compared to competitors so headcount is being reduced. I'll be down to the RAV office later this week. I met my boss today and he told me I can use him as a reference and say that my sacking was due to this downsizing rather than my hernia, if I like.

Would you be making fun of people who get riled up by people posting threads about "possible to live on 120K CHF" again?

When you register with RAV, they will give you a pile of forms. One of these is for your employer to fill out. It will be to your advantage if you can get your boss to put down the headcount reduction as the reason for your loss of employment.

It is possible that the form will be filled out by your HR so ask your boss to tell them that's how it should be. If not, those HR bots will just put the reason down as a dismissal.

Also, be aware that all the information on the RAV forms will end up in their database so it's best not to leave any information that might work against you in your future job search as potential employers can look at the RAV database for candidates.

Re: Lost my job due to illness

well I did go down to the RAV office. The conditions on looking for a new job are quite strict and I must notify my "mentor" each time I plan on leaving the canton! On the plus side, it looks as though I will be entitled to 70% of my salary for the next 18 months if I don't find work so that is not bad at all

There really is a huge amount of paperwork to fill out, it will probably take me most of next week. Things moved very quickly. I registered on Thursday and had an appointment with my "mentor"on Friday morning already. I'm not sure if he will be of much help in finding a job but he seems a decent guy.

I'll keep you posted on how things work out.

Re: Lost my job due to illness

Things are going much better now and my hernia is now very much improved, thank you. I have had 6 massage sessions with a physiotherapist. He also gave me a set of exercises which I do three times a day. I also go the gym four times a week and do a lot of exercies for my upper back and shoulders / neck area. My therapist says that my chances of avoiding a relapse are good, I just need to continue with exercising and build up strong back, shoulder and neck muscles.

On the job front, I will start a new 2 month contract next week. I have had 2 interviews for other positions also.

Today, after much badgering from friends and aquaintances, I went to the UNIA trade union to see if what my sacking was legal and if I could be entitled to any compensation. First I had to join the union, paying 3 months dues upfront (150 CHF). Then ,after a one hour wait to see a counsellor, I was told that I had no case whatsoever and that my company was in the right :-(

Still haven't received my work certificate from my ex-employer.
