The way I understand the OP is single.
But "these people" probably aren't.

Re: Germany or Switzerland?

Honestly I much rather pay for good schooling than for a retirement insurance where I will never see one Euro again in my life. And what they here call Kindergarten is hardly comparable to the German version which would rather be called "playgroup" and it's not free at all, you pay according to your salary.

1. Of course you do see some money from your retirement insurance.
2. A Swiss Kindergarden, though officially pre-scool, is nothing mor than a playgoup.
3. In Freiburg, you pay 145€ per month for a 3 year old (260 below 3 years). For the second child, 87 and for the third 65. That's a bit more than free, but much closer to free than what you would pay in CH.

Re: Germany or Switzerland?

My eldest daughter went to Kindergarten in Germany (80 Euros/month) and it was way more than a playgroup as they had a lot of activities there from "Musikalische Früherziehung" (music lessons for young children), "Zahlenland" (first maths), French in groups once a week, and for the last year their future primary school teacher came in once a week to get to know the kids, their abilities so far etc.
Swiss Kindergarten are way more "playgroups" than what we experienced in Germany
