Hiring a domestic worker, basic pay and what else needs to be included by law?

Hi all.

I've searched many different terms under this category and had no luck finding the answer to my questions so here I go.

I would like to hire someone to help us in the domestic aspect of our household. We are willing to pay the appropriate going rates but I don't know what they are here in Switzerland?

Back in Canada our housekeeper was employed as a private contractor. We paid her a set wage per hour and she took care of the paying her taxes and pensions from that. We always guaranteed her set hours per week per month regardless of whether we needed her or not and we we always made sure she was well taken care of despite our holiday or business requirements. We are generous employers but we just want to have some guidelines on what to offer and then take it from there.

Do I need to make a contract here with a domestic helper? If so what is considered a respectable average hourly wage for domestic help here? Also when does the requirement for paying the social security level 1 pension (AHV) take effect? (for example is it 4 hours per week or 8 hours per week or per month?) What are the laws around this? I would appreciate hearing from any of you with experience in this area.

Maybe this article
"Domestic Workers in Switzerland Protected by the Country’s First Sectoral Employment Contract" dated February 11, 2011 will provide some useful information for you.
