IS 110K CHF sufficient for single guy?

I received a job offer paying 110 k CHF per annum (9,166 monthly) with guaranteed bonus. I am single and vegetarian. Company pays health insurance. Question is whether this salary is adequate or will I need to be extra thrifty?

Thank you, and am looking forward to the move

I'm not sure. Stuff for single are incredibly expensive here and you'll be surprise how expensive too is the vegetarian food.

Well, welcome to the forum and in Geneva

I don't know what your lifestyle is like, but you're highly likely to be more than fine.

Is CHF120K a good salary in Switzerland?

Have a read of that thread, after taking a good look at the first post.

Re: IS 110K CHF sufficient for single guy?

Here is another helpful thread, where someone else has taken time and trouble to compile useful information (other useful links contained within):

FAQ: Is CHF100'000 a good salary?

A lot of useful information can be found using the search function - as, not surprisingly, this is a common recurring question. You should try to familiarise yourself with it - you'll need it when it comes to finding accommodation in Geneva.

As a footnote, many Swiss families survive on the same, or less, and pay their own health insurance.

[there .... I did it ..... I was nice and not sarcastic, or hard on a noob]

Don't be surprised if some replies seem less helpful.

Re: IS 110K CHF sufficient for single guy?

The meat here is ridiculously expensive and not very good, so I think you will end up saving a lot more being a vegan.

This is coming from a texan that could buy big high quality pieces of pounds of steak for the price of a "piece"/bite of meat here. =P

Re: IS 110K CHF sufficient for single guy?

If you are going to live in Geneva I'd rather focus on the housing issue: difficult to find and expensive.
As you live at the border with France you have a great advantage: euro is cheaper, and food is cheaper in France. So all in all it won't cost you that much.

agree. get the employer to pay for and find your housing too, and you're all set.

You will do MORE than fine with that money. As previously said, many families live on less and they're not starving either. Take my family for example

You'll be fine with that salary. As mentioned by others: housing is the actual problem, if you find something nice it's too expensive, if it's cheap you will be faced with 300 people interested in that apartment.

You should be fine with this salary. I lived in Nyon in the neighboring
Canton and really enjoyed it.

Re: IS 110K CHF sufficient for single guy?

No, it's not. Not nearly enough. Carrots cost 30 francs a pound, lettuce 50 francs a head. , muesli is reserved for Kazakh politicians' wives, who are the only ones able to afford to buy, even the hedge fund people barely make ends meet. I have friends with about 1mn CHF in savings, they can't find an apartment to buy and are thinking of moving to Mexico, where there is a little less violence than in Geneva's mean streets.

Stay away.

Before you go, could I have your job? I am currently feeding a family as a freelance journalist (26 years' experience) in the city.

Re: IS 110K CHF sufficient for single guy?

The question is:

Where do you come from?
Which kind of appartment you looking for?
How many flights you gonna make and where?

If the company is who i think it is with 110k you will be just fine.
The health insurance is not the only thing they pay.

If you are used to 100k in USA maybe 100k here is only for the experience.

I came with 25 from Portugal and i am much better here.

First, I want to thank TiMow for his very sensible reply, a much nicer way to welcome someone to the forum than simply giving a series of groans.

Second, I wanted to welcome you to the forum and suggest, as TiMow did, that you use the search function to find lots of other good information on here. Chance are, if you've asked a question, someone else has asked it before. There's a ton of good information at your fingertips, just waiting to be searched.

Third, I wanted to shamelessly plug one of my other posts, which I suspect will pre-empt the next question you have:

FAQ: A brief guide to salaries in Switzerland

Good luck on your move to Switzerland. Being a vegetarian, you're likely to have a significantly cheaper cost-of-living than us carnivores, because meat is seriously spenny over here...

You know guys - if you really want these threads to stop - simply make one answer with the right link and then stop posting. I think the mods should lock them after that first reply.
