I find that if you are single and no kids, you can manage on 6k (and im not even in a big city....) otherwise you need much more to live without thinking bout what you are spending every damned second
Students manage on 2k. It's a really tough question and you need to really delve deeply into exactly what sort of lifestyle you expect for your money.

Re: Entry level investment banking salary

Agreed.

I was working on the rough assumption that a young banker in London would have a typical London lifestyle (lashings of beer served in public houses), rather than be a keen skier, mountain hiker, and lake swimmer. In the latter case, he would be quids in when moving to Geneva.

Also truer.

I worked there for a while, ten years back. Hardly saw a single Swiss person the whole time.

Thanks a lot for your replies guys. I am a very keen skier, so a Swiss lifestyle wouldn't be too bad I guess. Also, I'm sure I'd find an English/Irish pub somewhere in Geneva if a need to lash overcame me

As for more details - the bank I'm speaking of is an American bulge bracket, and I'd work in its securities processing unit.

Hi all,

I have been invited for an interview at one of the largest international banks in Geneva for an entry-level role in operations. I was wondering what kind of salary I should be aiming for - I have an offer at a comparable firm in London and it starts at around 30k+, but I have no idea what to expect in Switzerland. Thanks for the replies!

Roger
i'd say 30k in london is similar to 70k in geneva.

30K London is a flat share, a meal out twice a month if you're luckly and not much left over.

30k in London, depending on location is an 800 per month studio or 1 bedroom flat, bills, clothes, 50 quid a week groceries and eating out twice a week
you're talking about different Londons I guess?

So would it be fair to expect 140k for 10 years experience in banking ops in that case? I assume as this commands around the 85k-95k mark in London that the figure is about right for CH...

When the exchange rate was 2.40, London would have looked attractive.

Seriously? I am floored by this! Can anyone else confirm?
I think the above estimate is way too high. Geneva cost of living vs London: you'd need to do a bit more of a detailed calculation than what is on here. But in a broad sense the other estimates mentioned are more on the mark.

Hmm, 12 must be the new 13, as neither me, my wife, or any of the (30ish) people I know here get 13.

For my first 12 years here I got 13 salaries, it's not that strange. How many are Ex Pats who did not know better?
