Thoughts on contracting in Geneva

Hi all...

Just been offered an IT contract role in Geneva for 700 CHF per day. Have been having a browse on the forum and this actually appears to be on the lower end of the IT contract market in Switzerland... whereas in the UK, even in the rest of Europe, this would be a top notch rate (even accounting for the exch rate)... I'm told I should expect about 22-25% deductions, which appears fair.
So my question is: what am I missing here? Why the ridiculous rates, there has to be a reason?? It cant simply be down to the exch rate at the moment, can it? Is it just a weird sense of perspective by some of the IT contractor posters? Or bragging or what?

Interested in your thoughts, as I thought this was a belting deal... but appears to be well under market rate... which I just struggle to understand/believe... I'm missing something surely??

Cheers,

Lee

Re: Thoughts on contracting in Geneva

If my maths are correct, that would correspond to an annual salary of 168,000 CHF (I have counted 48 weeks, assuming that if you are on a daily rate you will not be paid for holidays).

That looks like a pretty good salary to me, even allowing for the cost of living here. I bet at least 80% of the people in Switzerland can only dream about earning that much.

From what I have seen of IT consultancy rates (which is admittedly limited to two or three instances) it's definitely not "well below the market rate"... at least not for someone doing actual work. You don't actually say what level the position is at, which makes it hard to be sure.

well...

...depending on your experience/skillset/employer business etc. 700 per day could be great or quite low - i would say it is approx a mid market rate for junior-medium experience java developer...more experience, in a bank you can expect more

...you say accounting for the exch rate - well that depends on how much you account for the exch rate - my salary would have doubled in GBP terms since coming here in 2001 (excl. any actual rises in what they pay me) - it doesn't make living here any cheaper/easier, but it means the money i send back to uk is getting me more GBPs....

...deductions probably about right, but read up on the fact that you will be initially source taxed (as you're foreign), then later you will have to file a tax return (due to salary level) - this could leave you owing more to the tax man maybe 18 months after finishing here...

Geneva is one of the most expensive cities to live in in CH. Housing is very expensive, that is assuming if you can find anything at all (due to lack of availabilty)

A wag and a veteran and a troll, you must be a hoot at parties... how does search help with an opinion? How does it help when the results are a few months and more out of date.

Re: Thoughts on contracting in Geneva

Thanks Stephen_NE, Jaudi and Runningdeer gave me something to think about relating to my specific question for which I found only out-dated or cursory information when I did use the search option... and nice welcome to the forum from the veteran, always a pleasure.
