Is there a rule on taking a sabbatical?

Hey,
For some time now i have been pondering taking off and travelling, unfortunately this would mean quitting my job/visa etc (my employer cannot offer unpaid leave). However at the dentist this morning i was told that under law a sabbatical has to be granted if requested.

Does anyone know if this is true?

I have checked the various posts on employment law but everything is in German

Cheers

Re: Is there a rule on taking a sabbatical?

No, it's not true in general. It is customary in certain professions (academics, clergy, civil servants above a certain pay grade) and permitted by a few (mostly large, multinational) employers - but elsewhere it is still very much the exception.

You will have to check your work contract or talk to HR. Terms to look for in your contract (assuming it's in German) would be "Auszeit", "Sabbatjahr" or possibly "Langzeiturlaub".
