Salary expectations in switzerland IT sector (Ruby on Rails)

Hi all,

I need a help with salary expectations in Swiss IT market for Ruby on Rails sector (Zurich). I'm not familiar with that (Swiss market), that's why I can't get any idea how much to ask from employer. I have 5+ years experience in software engineering and development. For last 2+ years I'm Ruby on Rails developer, had worked on various enterprise and small business projects, intranet services etc.

I have checked a lot of topics on this forum, and found some calculators for salary wages, but I'm still not sure about what to expect.

I will highly appreciate your suggestions!

Hello. I'll take a punt and say 100-130 base. However, you're probably better to contact one of the Swiss agencies and pose this question directly. Try the guys at http://www.stamford-consultants.com or http://www.swisslinx.com.

100 CHF - 130 CHF sounds good! Thank you for links.

130 would definitely be a high end salary...

Why? Could you give some background, why so? Maybe somebody is familiar with ROR market?

130k is a good (experienced) developer salary at one of the big banks - and they're pretty much not hiring right now - i would set expectations nearer 100k for you experience/skills in this market

Yes, this looks much more realistic, than 130K. Thank you for clarifying!

Big banks hiring or not (and they aren't at the moment...), they are not using cutting edge technologies like ROR (yet?). You may find positions requiring this in other industries or in software houses but then salaries are lower than in banking.

To make big money in a bank as a developer, you have to either be around trading acivities (java, c++, multithreading, etc...) and/or bring in-depth business knowledge .

I'm not sure that 130 would be classified as "big money" in CH banks. Regardless, 120-130 seems to be the standard base for an AD level role for .net/oracle/sybase/etc.
