Teaching English in Swiss Primary schools.

Hi,
Could anyone tell me at what age do Swiss children learn English and how is it taught.
I am a qualified primary teacher and have spent 2 years teaching German though games and songs in Primary Schools in England.
I am moving to Switzerland soon and will be hoping to work with Primary age children. I would love to be able to do a similar job teaching English to beginners (up to age 11)
Does anyone here have such a job or could anyone give me any useful info?
I will be in Aarau area.

Thanks

Re: Teaching English in Swiss Primary schools.

The situation varies from canton to canton. There's a project called HarmoS to make the plans more similar. You can find some basic information here and start your search from there.

To my knowledge most primary school classes only have one or at most two teachers, I'm not sure there's a demand for English only teachers in this age group in public schools.

You should check my concern and probably widen your search to older classes and/or private schools, good luck!

I would concur, official english classes only seem to start in teenage age groups and often is not compulsory (generally). Most opt for french, italian (in the german cantons). From my experience most swiss students get their crash course at university level where intensive courses and their natural linguistic abilities get them up to speed very quickly.

I do however have many progressive colleagues (all academics) who have sought out private english teachers for their kids from age 4, so maybe this is a niche to condsider.

Thanks, good for me that in Aarau and Zurich English is the first foreign language.
Presumably the class teachers just teach the English then.

Does anyone know where i could see the curriculum?

Thanks DNAMan. Not sure I would be satisfied with one to one teaching, though if there was the need and i could find a venue small group lessons could be an option privately.

I know some people who work in a school in the city of Zurich. They class teachers are required to get the Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English CAE and then they theach the language themselves. There is no particular English teacher in the concerned school.
