Jobs in Bern

Hi everyone,

I moved to Switzerland with my Swiss girlfriend about two months ago. I am learning German at the Migros Klubschule at the moment and have almost finished my A1 course. I am also working part-time at a small garage here but I am not earning much. We are currently living with my girlfriend's parents in St. Gallen. We really want to move out as soon as possible as living with parents is extremely difficult for us as we have lived on our own in England for four years. My girlfriend is going to start her Masters course at University in Bern in a few weeks. We would really like to move somewhere near Bern so that she doesn't have to spend 5 hours a day travelling almost every day. We do have the deposit to rent a flat but the problem is that I need to find a full-time job in Bern before we can move there. I am a fully qualified motor technician with 8 years experience. Could anyone give me any ideas finding a job there? I wouldn't mind doing something else. We have been looking for weeks and it's proving really difficult. Also, how difficult is it to get a flat as a foreigner? Are the landlords generally a bit funny? Thanks.

Re: Jobs in Bern

People rent to foreigners although we had to apply to several places until one said yes since it is a bit competitive.

Re: Jobs in Bern

You really need to get a job first, as owners are supposed to check that your rental doesn't exceed 33% of your income.

Many apprentices have just finished training, so jobs are thin on the ground right now. It ain't easy, and good luck!

You could try asking for help here as your girlfriend will be at the university.

Re: Jobs in Bern

We found a small 2 bedroom house (950 kalt) a few km from Bern from ads placed in Uni Bern internet web site. Without being in Switzerland and visits in persons. They were not interested in any work contract or listing of our income, they do not want a deposit and no advance fees. Just wanted us to promise (over email) we will pay rent in time and that we will have the insurance meeting their requirements. Of course, we will have a contract once we arrive in Switzerland.

We were very pleasantly surprised by this after reading horror rental stories in this forum .
