Can foreigners work in Swiss Civil Service?

Can foreigners works in Swiss Civil Service? Is this possible if you just know English? Is there a central website where civil service jobs are advertised? (I don't know mean jobs with the UN or other international bodies.)

Also are hospitals part of the civil service?

You have to be fluent in the local language. A friend of mine volunteers for service in Geneva city, and I think he is a furriner with a C permit.

Yes. But 99% of the job descriptions ask for either FR/DE/IT mother tongue. There are a few which don't, but these are, from what I've seen, mainly scientist positions and ask for English and a good knowledge of either FR/DE. If it's in a department which deals with legal affairs, you're unlikely to get a job without a Swiss passport. google bund jobs.

You don't have to be Swiss to work in the confederation although for police and customs in some cantons it's a requirement.

I work in IT and am in a bundesamt for several years and when I started I was even on a B permit.

If you are looking for jobs in the bund here is the link.

Unfortunately the no longer have the salary class on the ads so it is hard to say how much they are willing to pay.

good luck

John

Re: Can foreigners work in Swiss Civil Service?

Sorry on the language front forgot to mention I am an English speaker although I do speak good French and reasonable Hoch deutsch - probably would not have got the job otherwise.

It is a requirement that you have good fluency in one and can understand the other. In principal everyone is allowed to speak his or her national language so you have a meeting where someone asks a question in French and the other person responds in German.

Incidentally Swiss Germans are obliged to speak Schrift deutsch when French speakers are present and they are pretty good at sticking to this rule

regards

John
