Advice for PhD wanting to work in pharma

Hello,

I moved to Zurich from London 6 weeks ago and wanted to know if anyone has any tips on finding work in industry for a PhD graduate? I gained my PhD in clinical cancer research recently and I have experience of working in a contract research organisation 7 years ago. I do not seem to fit any recruiters criteria so I'm looking at junior entry level positions which seem to be rare. In the meantime I'm taking intensive German language courses to at least have a basic level of German. Any advice on this and info on the current pharma job market situation would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Re: Advice for PhD wanting to work in pharma

Would you give me a bit more detail of your education? I am you would be suited maybe for pre clinical research or maybe it would also be a good idea to check Novartis' NIBR ???
Be advised though that many people working in Pharma are MD PhD at least in Clinical and the competition is fierce..best of luck!

Re: Advice for PhD wanting to work in pharma

Have you done a post-doc, or are you looking to do an industrial post-doc, or just get a job in pharma?

Jobs like this don't require a PhD but do require experience. You might be best looking for an entry-level Clinical Trials Associate role. Something like this or this. These usually don't require a PhD or MD. Being the person responsible for a clinical trials planning and implentation (like a Clinical Project Manager) will usually require a clinical qualification. But, at least at my last place of employment, most of the people doing the administration and operations type roles were BSc or PhD scientists or administrators.

You may need more than basic German though.

I would suggest getting in touch with Tomas Chleborad at Stamford Consultants, they are a recruitment company specialised in Pharma, IT and Finance. They have offices in Basel Zurich and the UK, I think they can really help you!

Re: Advice for PhD wanting to work in pharma

Hello, thanks so much for those replies.

DJ H - I hadn't heard of Stamford Consultants so will give them a try.

TitanTurbo - I haven't done a postdoc and don't really have the enthusiasm to do one.. at least at the moment. I just want to get into pharma either in a clinical operations role or a specialist role in oncology. I'm so glad you posted those links - I must have missed the ad on Monster - I will definitely apply for that one- thanks!!

Angela 74 - I have probably answered your questions above. I have a BSc in Biology and an MSc in genetics as well. There is one job at Novartis I could apply for but it is only 50% and very junior but I will keep looking on their website. Thanks for your comments.

Re: Advice for PhD wanting to work in pharma

It's tough finding a job in science unless you exactly fit the profile. Not knowing German will limit your search to English speaking roles which won't help matters. You've got to continue to be persistant and maybe be willing to do a lower skilled job while you wait for something better.

That's why I like Indeed, it seems to be able to pull out unseen ads even from sites you visit directly.

Hve you considered Medical/Scientific writing? A lot of Pharma companies are looking for native English speakers for these fields.
