And the trailing spouse record goes to...

For the trailing spouses, how long did it take before you found a job? And, what seemed to be the key?

Re: And the trailing spouse record goes to...

i started working on my own, freelance about two weeks after we came. then, i started a real job 3 months later. key, for me, was talking to everyone i met. i didn't actually get my main job through this, but it definitely gave me the confidence and drive to just apply to places i wanted to work and feel comfortable at the interview, plus a lot of contacts and side work. good luck!

Most trailing spouses I know never intended to work here - male and female both.

For my wife it took a year and the key was to learn the language.

3 months. However, this was 10 years ago.
No key, just luck.

Re: And the trailing spouse record goes to...

12 months...found the job via the english forum, and was lucky that I could prove 'specialist' skills/qualifications. Managed to have work permission added to a Non-EU 'L" dependent spouse permit....the job had been advertised for 12 months, so there was a strong dossier to prove that they couldn't get anyone to take the position.

However, we brought an 8 month old baby with us, and two older children, so I wasn't actually looking for work until the job turned up on EF....the timing just happened to be perfect...and the employer was willing to bend it around my family commitments...

That job lead to my current job - I would never have landed my current position, had I not taken the previous one, and I'd quite happily have stayed in my old job if the new one hadn't come looking for me

Having mother-tongue english is a requirement of my job, but my German has improved enormously from working in a bilingual environment. The staff speak both High and Swiss German around me, every day...

Re: And the trailing spouse record goes to...

It took my husband 2 months to be employed, he started immediately, he already spoke German but had been taking some refresher lessons.

Re: And the trailing spouse record goes to...

About 6 weeks. Arrived in CH on August 17, saw the job online and emailed my resume on September 23; received a phone call from the recruiting agency same day; 3 interviews and 1 week later, I signed the contract. Key was my previous (international) experience.

2.5 weeks! I was looking for 50% ended up with a 100% 5 month contract which they've made permanent. I've been told how lucky I am considering my heart wasn't really in finding a job so fast! Good luck!

Re: And the trailing spouse record goes to...

My wife landed a job (as a social worker) within 3 months, although she was not looking for one. She just wanted to take an inside look on how things were organised here, was showed around, and could not leave without a contract proposal. She signed a week later!

The key: carrying an internationally accredited diploma, of which there obviously are not enough available locally.
